A truly elegant graph

A truly elegant graph

I shared this blog with a friend and he shared this image with me (along witha reccomendation that we read Tufte's Visual Display of Quantitative Information). I think it's breathtaking. And my ability to have an emotional response to it has caused this class to get a great deal more personal. It's only beautiful because it's wrong and complex and so completely self-assured.

This is indeed a classic case illustrating how to convey information in a visually rich, interesting way (allows you to take some things in at a glance). All sorts of manipulation is possible in that moment!>

Here's a modern (less complex) example posted to the ATTW-L list yesterday. You'll see the interesting blend of the analytical, graphical, empirical, and whimsical.

It's a Quicktime movie. That's a snapshot to the right.
