Henry Jenkins is haunting me

Ever since we started reading Convergence Culture, Henry Jenkins has been popping up everywhere. He's quite the popular writer in the media sources that I frequent. The most recent sighting was in my new issue of GOOD magazine, which also happens to be a fairly new publication. They've just published their third issue and as a quick aside, I was a little suspicious of the quality prior to this issue but I've found this one useful. It's called "The Media Issue" and contains some interesting discussions that I recommend checking out. In fact, the print edition of the magazine is an enjoyable visual and tactile experience that the website cannot replicate, so I'd recommend picking up a copy. (Barnes and Noble carries it.)

But getting back to Jenkins...His article deals, unsurprisingly, with fan culture. The title "Serenity Now" references the feature length film based on the cancelled television series Firefly. The film's production and success is largely ("almost entirely" would not be much of a stretch) due to the dedication of Firefly fans. Having now scooped a large part of the article for you, check it out:) It's worth it just for the part about Firefly fans sending a $2 million invoice to Universal. To find out why, click here.

Yep, he's hanuting me a bit too. I now read his blog everyday and even my public rhetoic paper wouldn't be possible without huge sections of his book (I hope Pat is ready for some good ol' fandom discussion in my paper). He's even writing about Second Life for the love of god.

Your comments about Firefly are interesting in the grand scheme, because they remind us how the creator figure is still important in convergence culture. Joss Whedon creates his own stories, but is personally very open to fans reworking and creating their own fictions. At the same time, when it becomes time for canon he makes canon. The official season 8 of Buffy started in comic book form last week (it's brilliant btw) helmed by Whedon himself. Yes, it goes directions that wipe out all the speculation of fans who've written their own season 8 stories. But I don't think it ruins the fans' stories and they all simultaneously want the canonical tale. A happy collaboration of creators and fans, whooda thunk it?

So, do you have a copy? It's sold out and the second printing is on pre-order. I've got to see that! Oh, and as I've said before and will say again: if Joss Whedon wasn't already married and I didn't have a super wonderful partner, I'd be first in line! ~Cat
