Principal Research Interests:
My research focuses on the interactions among atmosphere, biosphere, and human dimension in the context of climate change, chemical element cycles, and policy-making. To study these interactions, I use a systems approach that integrates the basic principles of biology, physics, and chemistry. My primary research is to integrate the knowledge derived from field and laboratory experiments with theoretical and computational techniques to advance ecosystem sciences.
One of my major research activities is on carbon exchanges between terrestrial
ecosystems and the atmosphere. I began studies in this area during my
dissertation in
My second major research activity is on modeling trace gas emissions from
ecosystems and their effects on climate and society. I’ve modeled methane
exchanges between ecosystems and the atmosphere by considering the effects of
permafrost dynamics, hydrological and vegetation dynamics on methane cycling.
The model of methane dynamics I developed has been tested and validated by
using observations from a variety of ecosystems at different geographical
regions. As a case study, the model has been applied to
Recently, my research interests were expanded to analyzing consequences
of ozone damage and other pollutants for ecosystem services and the
economy. For example, I’ve been involved in several studies using a
biogeochemistry model, Terrestrial Ecosystem Model (TEM) and MIT’s
Integrated Global System Model to investigate the ozone effects on net
primary productivity and carbon sequestration for the continental US and the
globe. The research concluded that the effects of ozone should be factored into
future calculations of the
