When to cite ancient/modern source?

1.   Direct quotations – Use these to bolster your argument.

(According to Plutarch,… Strabo says …, etc)

3.   Any point that is crucial to your argument

When to cite secondary vs. primary sources?

1.    contradictory details in the source tradition

2.    for interpretation of complex primary source information

3.    Mention of an author by name or by indirect statement.

4.    Allusion to scholarly opinion, e.g., “some scholars think this, some think that…” This would require a footnote indicate the scholars you have consulted. Similarly, “Considerable disagreement prevails regarding the matter of such and such…” Give examples of who is disagreeing with who in a footnote, even if you do not go into the controversy itself.
