PLEASE NOTE: THE WEBSITE OF THE NORTH AMERICAN LEVINAS SOCIETY HAS A NEW HOME. TO VIEW THE 2007 CONFERENCE PROGRAM (JUNE 10-12, 2007), PLEASE VISIT WWW.LEVINAS-SOCIETY.ORG Dear Friends, Welcome to the website for the North American Levinas Society. We would like to give a cordial and sincere thank you to everyone who has taken interest in the founding, organization, and development of the North American Levinas Society. The inaugural meeting and conference was such a success, drawing participants from six continents with a variety of perspectives and interests in the possibilities of Levinas’ work. It was really quite extraordinary to witness the diversity of political and ethical deliberation, to approach one another with a sense of purpose, hope, and anticipation. The inaugural meeting saw independent scholars, graduate students, young faculty and established scholars vigorously interacting in a variety of social and academic contexts. Six months after the successful, and enthusiastically attended, inaugural conference of the North American Levinas Society, we are very pleased to formally announce the details of the second annual meeting and conference of the North American Levinas Society. The title and theme of the 2007 meeting and conference of the North American Levinas Society, to be held at Purdue University’s Memorial Union on June 10-12, 2007, will be "Levinas and Community." We are especially excited to announce the attendance of some members of Levinas’ family—including Simone (Levinas) Hansel, George Hansel, David Hansel, and Joelle Hansel—all of whom will deliver plenary sessions. Additionally, we are particularly pleased to announce that George Kunz, fitting with the theme of Levinas and community, will give a plenary on Levinas's inspiration for understanding psychopathology and psychotherapy; Professor Kunz’s work is proving integral to developing new ways of concretely applying Levinas’ work toward issues of ethics and social justice. We would like to thank all of you for your important contributions to the formative stages of our Society. We are especially grateful to last year’s plenary speakers, including Bettina Bergo, Richard Cohen, Enrique Dussel, Sandor Goodhart, Claire Katz, and Diane Perpich. Additionally, we are grateful to the Levinas family and to George Kunz for their commitments to the upcoming 2007 conference.
