Responses to and Techniques Using Visual Rhetoric

Visual Rhetoric

This week, we are focusing on three different texts that address various aspects of visual rhetoric.  The articles by Blair, Horn, and Kostelnick describe the complex considerations when focusing on visual arguments, from how rhetorical devices such as metaphors are represented visually, to the multiple layers of visuals and how they work.

Ultimately, visual arguments work very much like print arguments, with similar rhetorical devices and strategies, although the representation is different.

Find a visual argument (it can be a flyer, a website, a photo, an advertisement) that you find particularly effective OR ineffective.  Provide the link to the visual or upload/attach it to your post.  Use the concepts you learned in the three articles by Blair, Horn, and Kostelnick to analyze the argument.  Describe what devices the writer has used and discuss why the argument is effective or ineffective.

Next, read your classmates' posts and look at their chosen visual arguments.  Respond to their posts with your own analysis of their chosen pieces.
