Be Found … Doing Remarkable Things

One day a few of us were hanging out downstairs at The Found when our pastor, Shawn, came down and asked, “Where do you want to go on spring break this year?”

When we were in high school the answer would have been an unanimous “Florida!”  It didn’t matter who asked the question, that’s where we wanted to go.  But we still needed a way to get there.  And if mom and dad wouldn’t (or couldn’t) take us, we knew someone from school would be going. After all, Florida is a tradition! But deep down we kinda hoped mom and dad couldn’t go (and we probably don’t need to get into the “why” for now – let’s just say we wanted to enjoy the “scenery”) but just believe that we knew we’d get there and that we hoped it wouldn’t be with our parents. It was tradition.

Now we have this other tradition.  We still do spring break, but now we go with other stuff on our minds.  One spring we went to Boston.  Our transmission blew up just as we parked the van, but it was still an awesome trip.  We worked in a food bank, helped remodel a place for homeless people and even got interviewed on a local Boston radio program.  As Meg put it after we went there, “We head for places where we can serve others. It’s a tradition at The Found.”

Another spring we went to Texas and built Habitat houses.  Walter wasn’t sure he wanted to go … hadn’t bought into the tradition … but he came anyway.  Afterward he said, “I went, but not necessarily because I wanted to.  It turned out that I really enjoyed myself and I helped people.  It was much better than sitting around for a week or doing the typical college break thing.  Many times we do the things we want to do.  But other times we decide to do the things we know we should do, and those are usually the things that make the most difference.”  Right after saying he had such a good time, he also said he wasn’t sure if he’d do it again.  But he did.  It’s a tradition.

So, where are we going this year?  So far the votes are favoring California or Washington D.C.  Some people say we do remarkable things when we get together so either way it’s going to be another sweet trip.  Have a preference?  Want to get in on the conversation?  Visit us at The Found and ask for Hannah.

And hey, Pastor Shawn!  Since you asked, we just thought we’d let you know that if you’re really good, we’ll let you come with us again this year :)
