Happy 10th of July!

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

I know I’ll come across as an old woman or something, but I really don’t like fireworks. I never loved them, and every day I like them less. I pretty much hate them these days. They seem to bring out the worst in people who weren’t that great to begin with.

So it is with great displeasure that I’ve heard fireworks in my neighborhood every night for more than a year. Every night. I swear. Rain, snow, whatever. Either that or a lot more people are getting shot than they say on the news.

So it is with even greater displeasure that I suffer through another July 4th. Every yahoo in town is lighting stuff. How that can be much fun down here where there’s no space and everything’s lit up 24/7 so you can’t even get good contrast, I don’t know. But it sounds like a freaking warzone out there.

Anyway, Lafayette passed an explicit fireworks ordinance. Hooray! The morons have until midnight tonight to conduct their wargames. They can start again at 5pm tomorrow and play from 5:00pm until “two hours after sunset” (they don’t say what that means in the press release) through Monday. No fireworks from July 10th until New Year’s Eve- under penalty of a fine up to $250.

At $250 a pop (though I imagine they won’t fine anybody this week), the cops might actually do something about this. I hope so.
