Halloween: Not This Year

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Well, my construction (which was supposed to be done in the spring, you may recall) is still dragging on. There’s no way my house will be useful for Halloween (even Thanksgiving is pushing it at this point), so no party at my place this year.

I was hoping to rally the troops for an alternative here, and one friend in Indy has got one happening, but it’s still kind of depressing. I really probably would not have done (all of) this construction project if I knew it would take more than a year to complete. Not to mention the budget overrun. I’m sure it’ll be worth it, but it’ll make it hard to pull the trigger on the next phase- which I was hoping to do in summer.

Anyway, we’re down for now, but consider this advance notice for Halloween 2009. You can think of a good costume by then, I’m sure. And that stuff will be on clearance soon…

One for the Win Column

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

“No chatter on the blog, ab. Where you been?” Nowhere. A lot of stuff going on, but nothing getting done. Kind of a drag. Construction is still staggering along even though, yeah, we were supposed to be done in like April. Overall, I don’t even want to think about anything like that, which is why I haven’t posted.

But that doesn’t mean there’s no progress. In fact, at least one thing happened right on schedule: I paid off my mortgage.

I’d planned a few years ago to get that done before my birthday this year, and I did. Of course, it’s less meaningful with a new six-figure debt hanging over my head, but at least I accomplished something.

I’d planned to catch my breath after paying that off and then start this construction with a clean slate, but the repair part wouldn’t wait, so I’ve had to overlap. And, as you can guess, I am broker than broke, especially once the credit line ran out and I had start paying the contractor with real money, which I said I wasn’t going to do. Mostly because I really can’t.

If they get done soon, which they should unless we discover anything else interesting (guess I need to write about that), I should be OK in a couple of months, but things are still pretty hairy.

Now I’m bummed. See? Told you I didn’t want to talk about it.

Throw It At The Wall

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

I ordered my projector about a month ago. At the time, I was fairly unconcerned about shipping time. No sense paying to rush it when it’ll (still!) be weeks before I can really use it. But we would like to make sure the room proportions are right.

Apparently, my projector got lost somewhere in UPS. The vendor was supposed to send me another one by 2nd day UPS so it’d arrive last Friday. Didn’t happen. Turns out it didn’t get sent until Friday.

The Wrath of UPSThen the ZIP code got misread somewhere and it got sent to northern Michigan. After a tour of Chicago suburbs, it came back this way and arrived today. I don’t know why it went wrong- my address was right on the label. But it got here.

New RS2Worse the wear, though. The box was beat bloody and the packing materials were pretty well neutralized. The machine itself looks OK so far. Not a scratch on its piano black finish. It is a fetishistic piece of gear, but it has to be at this price.

The crew had set up a rolling scaffold and a box to try to simulate the location the projector will be mounted. Crosshatch on Temporary Surface I had it throw a test pattern and adjusted it until I got what I wanted. I couldn’t push it as high on the wall as I’d hoped because the ceiling beams aren’t straight. The frontmost one infringes on the upper-right corner of the picture. I called the contractor and he thinks we can swap them around to get a more level profile.

It’s hard to tell in a picture (unless I worked a lot harder at getting the exposure right), but it looks pretty impressive- especially considering that’s thrown at some pieces of that pink insulation sheet stuff nailed up. It’s also hard to tell just how big it is. It’s 9′ x 5′. Feet. Yeah.

How big is that? Say you’ve got a 40″ HD TV. Pile up nine of them. A little bigger than that. Honestly, I’d go bigger if I could, but there are several reasons a five foot tall screen is about the limit. And in terms of width, this allows plenty of room for a door and front-facing equipment.

The projector can certainly go bigger. It can also lens shift in all directions an amazing amount. It’s kind of spooky. Those things will give us a lot of choices for projector placement.

Before I left it for the evening, I dragged the PowerBook in and ran some of the “Dexter” DVD to see how typical moving pictures looked. The current “screen” has a really low gain, so the dark scenes were hard to judge, but the sunny Miami stuff looked pretty nice. Needs some tweaking, but it gives decent demo. Also gave me a chance to use my new GyroTransport Air Mouse. Ha!

A Sight for Sore Ears?

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

My speakers showed up today, and, like the rest of this stuff, I can’t try them yet, but I can tell you this: they’re beautiful.

No, really. These are damn fine looking speakers. Reminds me of something Steve Jobs once said: I almost want to lick them. If they sound half as good as they look, this is going to be fandamntastic.

My only concern is that they are 6Ω and I’d specced the system for 8Ω. The wiring is (deliberately) good enough for that, but the Denon really wants 8Ω if you double the surrounds. Should be OK as long as I don’t drive them too hard.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing them on the walls almost as much as firing them up so I can hear them. More reassurance that this will all pay off soon.

Don’t Open ‘Til Xmas

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

Today UPS brought stuff for my end (the electronic one, that is) of the third floor project. Trouble is, I can’t try any of this stuff out yet. It’s like waiting for Christmas morning.

I did fire up the receiver to get its firmware updated. That’s really neat. I added it to my DNS and DHCP server, pointed a web browser at it, and hit the button to update the firmware. It put good status info on the front panel display as it went. Seemed to finish in about the amount of time it said, and it knows it’s up-to-date now.

Of course, I haven’t anywhere to use it yet. Or speakers to hear it.

And speaking of speakers, my subwoofer showed up today. That’s a big box. It was upside down, and there’s a hole in the bottom that was wide enough to put my fingers in. In fact, it was deep enough to get my hand in! I thought the poor thing was toast, but it turns out they didn’t mess around packing it up. Not a scratch on it.

Of course, I haven’t anywhere to use it yet. Or a source to feed it.

I considered hooking the iPod to it. The idea of a tiny player with a 15″ speaker makes me laugh. But I can wait. Time will come soon enough.

Up Ahead

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

I’m long overdue posting a project update. I wrote one weeks ago, but didn’t put the pictures in it yet. I’ll get it done over the long weekend if I don’t get to it before. By then, I’ll have a whole slew of new pictures.

It’s only really begun to sink in that this is actually getting done. I’ve spent a long time planning and wanting this to happen, and now it seems like it’s going impossibly fast. My hope is that that’ll encourage me to get the other things on my list done- well, as soon as I can afford them. At least it’s a short list.

And speaking of that, I need some new hardware for the screening room. I wasn’t planning to get a lot immediately, but a couple of things are essential (and overdue). Trouble is, I don’t have the money for them. I thought I would by now (there are some unsettled accounts on my books), but no soup for me. I’m going to try to stretch out my credit line a little more so I can do this now and avoid tearing out my new walls a few months from now.

Assuming that works out OK, I should have a functional, though unfurnished and undecorated, room in a couple of weeks. Gosh. If that doesn’t help my morale, it’s time to seek help.

The destruction part of the project is moving too, but we’re still trying to figure out how to unpaint the soon-to-be-exterior(-again) brick walls. Seems like there should be a chemical answer to that problem, but none has appeared yet. Best suggestion so far is to paint over the paint with the color of the bare brick and paint between them in mortar color. Yeah, doesn’t sound great to me either, but on the high part it’ll probably look OK. I’m betting the first floor wall will look like ass though.

I still need to investigate tax credits, energy rebates, etc. I really should be taking more time off work so I can wrap my head around all this stuff. Though, that might ruin some of the magic of coming home and seeing what the magic elves have done while I was off in the mine. Yeah, I mixed my fairy tales. You want to make something of it, troll?

Anyway, I can see light at the end of this tunnel. Now let’s see if I can squeeze through there…

Phase One: A New Roof for An Old House

Monday, November 12th, 2007

I’m still waiting for the pictures the roofers took themselves, which should offer better close-ups, but I managed to take a few myself. Here’s one I took from my bedroom window of progress on the porch roof.

This is the back of the house with some guys on it. I like this one because it looks like the guy on the right is just chillin’. The brown wood you see in the foreground is the addition to the house that we’re removing next, so, no, they aren’t roofing that part.

Renovation Moving Forward

Friday, October 26th, 2007

Well, after some false starts and talking to some contractors (and being apparently ignored by a few others), the renovation of My Old House is underway! First step is a new roof, which should go on next week. This is a big, scary, high roof, so I’m glad I don’t have to work up there. I’ll stick some pictures in here later.

Next up is removing the current addition on the back of the house and replacing it with… something. We haven’t figured out exactly what yet. I’m going to try to come up with a model of the original house to play with so I can try different things. Stay tuned.

After that, I finally get to finish my attic. That’ll make four useful floors if you count the basement (and you should), which is great if you don’t mind climbing some stairs. Can’t even get in the house without using some, of course. There was clearly no ADA in 1905.
