(I bet Bill Maher will say the same thing tomorrow!)

I’ve been saying for a while (so I might as well get it on record here), that the Republican Dirty Tricks department would publicize the hunt for Osama bin Laden- especially if there’s any progress- in the run-up to the election. News today has a headline about looking for him in Pakistan. Hmmm. Guess I’m more on it than I thought.
Why is this significant? I’ll tell you. One, they’ll try to blur it with the other war activities to make the Iraq clusterfuck and McCain’s hawkish attitudes seem justified. And two- and I know how stupid this sounds- because “Osama” sounds like “Obama”. The more the names are in the press, the more likely a newsreader will slip-up and the more likely some (idiots) are going to draw some kind of connection.
And it must have some effect. It’s got to be a big part of the fuel to the “Obama is a Muslim” thing, which makes no sense in any objective light. I still don’t think calling someone a Muslim should be a slur any more than accusing them of being of any religion is, but adding that and repeated images and references to the Big Bad might keep a bunch of idiots from voting for Obama, or worse, making them vote for McCain.
If they actually manage to capture or confirm the death of bin Laden, the administration and the Republican party will credit it as a big win and an indicator that We’re Doing The Right Thing. If the Dems were smart, they’d spin it more in the right direction: About Damn Time. I know we can’t get back the last seven years of posturing or four thousand lives lost in unrelated battles, but how about fessing up to getting things wrong?
Finally tracking down bin Laden at this point to try to make good and, more cynically, to try to make your opponent look bad, isn’t all that impressive, folks. But they’ll try to spin it that way, and, unfortunately, a lot of people are going to eat it up.
“No chatter on the blog, ab. Where you been?” Nowhere. A lot of stuff going on, but nothing getting done. Kind of a drag. Construction is still staggering along even though, yeah, we were supposed to be done in like April. Overall, I don’t even want to think about anything like that, which is why I haven’t posted.
But that doesn’t mean there’s no progress. In fact, at least one thing happened right on schedule: I paid off my mortgage.
I’d planned a few years ago to get that done before my birthday this year, and I did. Of course, it’s less meaningful with a new six-figure debt hanging over my head, but at least I accomplished something.
I’d planned to catch my breath after paying that off and then start this construction with a clean slate, but the repair part wouldn’t wait, so I’ve had to overlap. And, as you can guess, I am broker than broke, especially once the credit line ran out and I had start paying the contractor with real money, which I said I wasn’t going to do. Mostly because I really can’t.
If they get done soon, which they should unless we discover anything else interesting (guess I need to write about that), I should be OK in a couple of months, but things are still pretty hairy.
Now I’m bummed. See? Told you I didn’t want to talk about it.
