And Which Quality Does “Goodrich” Describe?

November 3rd, 2008

Went to go see the 3-D conversion of The Nightmare Before Christmas yesterday. Goodrich Quality Theaters recently installed a digital system in one of the rooms at the Eastside 9 (nee 10). The only other 3-D title they’ve shown is Fly Me to the Moon, which I saw a few weeks ago. I was just marking time until Bolt comes out, so Nightmare was a pleasant surprise.

However, they managed to ruin my day. The projection was wrong so the eyes were switched. This is often called “pseudostereo”, and causes visual confusion, headaches, and nausea. Doesn’t give a decent 3-D effect either, but because your system is getting weird stimuli, it doesn’t look flat, so many viewers don’t know what’s wrong.

After the trailers were over and the movie still didn’t look right, I spent the next five minutes convincing myself the eyes were really switched and then did what you do when that’s the case- flipped my glasses over. Told T to as well.

Ah, much better. The 3-D conversion is pretty impressive, but, more exciting, they ran the trailer for Coraline, which is made by the same crew, the same way, but actually shot in 3-D. Yow! Could be the best 3-D movie ever. They said it was the first stop-motion shot in 3-D, which isn’t so (that’d be The Adventures of Sam Space- and yes, I’ve seen it), but it’s probably the first feature.

The row behind us was full of guys complaining about the 3-D. I tried to tell them to flip the glasses over, but they didn’t listen. Even after I explained it during the closing credits.

This brings us to several problems. First, “Goodrich” Quality control is obviously “low” or “no”. Modern digital 3-D projection is pretty straightforward. This is about the only thing that can go wrong, really, so they need someone there to make sure it doesn’t happen. They charge a $2 premium per ticket for 3-D. I expect them to deliver.

Second, it gives audience members a bad impression of the process, if not the movie itself. You can bet those guys sitting behind me will tell everyone that the 3-D conversion was worse than worthless. And some people in there might’ve been turned off enough by the physiological effects that they couldn’t enjoy the show at all.

After the movie was over, I went out to find someone to ask/tell about the projection problem. I asked a worker who I should tell about projection problems in the 3-D room, and she said, “Oh, just turn your glasses over!” Yes, I told her, but we shouldn’t have to do that, and the other people in there who don’t know to do that are going to have a miserable time.

She used her radio to summon a woman in a suit who told me they’d recently replaced “the [ polarizer ] glass” because they were getting double images with the old one. They’d had it a few weeks and hadn’t heard any complaints. I told her that didn’t mean much- no one complained from this show but me, and, let’s face it, I’m an expert on this stuff.

Bottom line is that I hope they get their standards up to snuff. I was so happy to finally have a 3-D-capable digital house in town, but so far they’ve not done better than random on getting things right. Next one will be the tie-breaker, and if they blow it, you’ll know it.

Halloween: Not This Year

October 24th, 2008

Well, my construction (which was supposed to be done in the spring, you may recall) is still dragging on. There’s no way my house will be useful for Halloween (even Thanksgiving is pushing it at this point), so no party at my place this year.

I was hoping to rally the troops for an alternative here, and one friend in Indy has got one happening, but it’s still kind of depressing. I really probably would not have done (all of) this construction project if I knew it would take more than a year to complete. Not to mention the budget overrun. I’m sure it’ll be worth it, but it’ll make it hard to pull the trigger on the next phase- which I was hoping to do in summer.

Anyway, we’re down for now, but consider this advance notice for Halloween 2009. You can think of a good costume by then, I’m sure. And that stuff will be on clearance soon…

Part II: The Wrath of Comcast

October 9th, 2008

OK, so I did send email to “Rick” besides my last post, so I’m not sure which one triggered the intense interest of Comcast, but they’ve made sure to email and phone me to check on things. That’s sort of flattering, I guess, even if some of the messages were misguided.

Turns out I was misinformed by the (Canadian, apparently) after-hours call center. Channels 4 (WTTV) and 6 (WRTV) are not slated to move to the digital lineup anytime soon. That’s good to know, and the crux of my complaint. I hadn’t heard they were moving because they aren’t. Problem solved.

I am interested in digital cable in general, and specifically for HD, but even at $2 a month (an estimate one rep gave me) per cable box, it’s still a big outlay. Before I commit to that, I’ll look into the option of buying some compatible boxes from somewhere. I’ve heard they’re too expensive to be cost-effective, but it’s worth a look.

So it’s not as dire as I’d feared, which is good, but we have learned that if there is (as there was) a problem between here and Indy or at the local office, there’s no longer any immediate response expected. Under Insight, there were techs on call who would fix things (and I’ve seen that work in the past). Apparently that’s not the case now, and nothing’s likely to happen same-day. Fortunately, those problems don’t come up often. I’m a systems administrator myself- I know how that stuff works, and that people only notice when it doesn’t.

Also, we’ve learned that at least this squeaky wheel gets some grease. And they don’t even know how serious I am about my TV and video. Well, maybe they could guess from this blog.

Finally, although there’s no rush, I am going to look into digital cable when the third floor remodel is done (or nearly so). I’ll follow up again then to let you know what I find out. I’d much rather get my networks from NYC and LA as DirecTV does than from Indy (that’s a whole ‘nother rant), but if I have to have Indy, I’d like to have HD as an option. (Yeah, then I could watch useless weather maps and election projections in high-resolution!)

So, thanks, Comcast, for the rapid response and for being reasonable about the “local” network affiliates. Play your cards right and you might get my ISP money too.

It’s Comcraptastic!

October 6th, 2008

Long before all you jokers got DVR religion, I was already watching all my TV from recordings. I’ve pretty much switched my legion of VCRs for a small army of DVRs, but the concept and the routine are not new to me.

So I come down to do my pre-primetime systems check tonight and two of the machines aren’t getting a cable signal. Everything looks fine, but they weren’t happy.

So I figured it out- some channels weren’t working. That’s not a problem on my end of the cable and I thought maybe they were having a problem at the local office. I called them up to tell them.

Off-hours customer service at Comcast is a little better than it was under Insight, but still not good. At least the phone-answerer knew the answer: those channels as of now are only available on digital cable. I informed them that I had not been informed and that I, personally, am steamed. The response was basically “tough shit” in about one and a half fewer words.

I fired off email to “Rick” from the Comcast website and stewed about how I was going to handle this. There’s no way I can get all my recorders to drive outboard tuners to my satisfaction. And what are they going to charge me to get anywhere close?

So I’m looking over my recording schedule to see how hard this’ll be when, lo and behold, channel 4 switched back on. And 6 too. I’m guessing the huge number of people who suddenly couldn’t watch “Dancing With the Stars” blowing up their switchboard made them change their collective corporate mind.

But what the heck is this? Are they serious? After all the reassuring press that the switch to digital won’t screw over cable subscribers, do they really want to do this? And without running a crawl on the affected channels for weeks like they’ve been doing with the Bright House Debacle? How can that possibly be good?

I’m hoping it was a mistake, but I smell trouble. The only major advantage cable has over satellite for me is that I don’t need to scale it for my use. If I have to get hardware for all my recorders, what’s the difference? Well, I’d probably need a second dish, I guess, but other than that, it’s a toss-up.

Somebody Had To Say It

September 11th, 2008

The AP headline reads “Bush marks Sept. 11 with moment of silence”. Isn’t that how he spent the first one?!

(I bet Bill Maher will say the same thing tomorrow!)

October Surprise?

September 10th, 2008

I’ve been saying for a while (so I might as well get it on record here), that the Republican Dirty Tricks department would publicize the hunt for Osama bin Laden- especially if there’s any progress- in the run-up to the election. News today has a headline about looking for him in Pakistan. Hmmm. Guess I’m more on it than I thought.

Why is this significant? I’ll tell you. One, they’ll try to blur it with the other war activities to make the Iraq clusterfuck and McCain’s hawkish attitudes seem justified. And two- and I know how stupid this sounds- because “Osama” sounds like “Obama”. The more the names are in the press, the more likely a newsreader will slip-up and the more likely some (idiots) are going to draw some kind of connection.

And it must have some effect. It’s got to be a big part of the fuel to the “Obama is a Muslim” thing, which makes no sense in any objective light. I still don’t think calling someone a Muslim should be a slur any more than accusing them of being of any religion is, but adding that and repeated images and references to the Big Bad might keep a bunch of idiots from voting for Obama, or worse, making them vote for McCain.

If they actually manage to capture or confirm the death of bin Laden, the administration and the Republican party will credit it as a big win and an indicator that We’re Doing The Right Thing. If the Dems were smart, they’d spin it more in the right direction: About Damn Time. I know we can’t get back the last seven years of posturing or four thousand lives lost in unrelated battles, but how about fessing up to getting things wrong?

Finally tracking down bin Laden at this point to try to make good and, more cynically, to try to make your opponent look bad, isn’t all that impressive, folks. But they’ll try to spin it that way, and, unfortunately, a lot of people are going to eat it up.

One for the Win Column

September 9th, 2008

“No chatter on the blog, ab. Where you been?” Nowhere. A lot of stuff going on, but nothing getting done. Kind of a drag. Construction is still staggering along even though, yeah, we were supposed to be done in like April. Overall, I don’t even want to think about anything like that, which is why I haven’t posted.

But that doesn’t mean there’s no progress. In fact, at least one thing happened right on schedule: I paid off my mortgage.

I’d planned a few years ago to get that done before my birthday this year, and I did. Of course, it’s less meaningful with a new six-figure debt hanging over my head, but at least I accomplished something.

I’d planned to catch my breath after paying that off and then start this construction with a clean slate, but the repair part wouldn’t wait, so I’ve had to overlap. And, as you can guess, I am broker than broke, especially once the credit line ran out and I had start paying the contractor with real money, which I said I wasn’t going to do. Mostly because I really can’t.

If they get done soon, which they should unless we discover anything else interesting (guess I need to write about that), I should be OK in a couple of months, but things are still pretty hairy.

Now I’m bummed. See? Told you I didn’t want to talk about it.

From Winehouse to Turnpike House

May 13th, 2008

So they say Amy Winehouse isn’t up to doing the Quantum of Solace song. That’s a shame, because I think that’d be awesome. So here’s an idea: how about Saint Etienne? Why the heck haven’t they done a Bond song yet? They’d knock that sumbitch out of the park. You can thank me later.

Halloween: Six Month Warning!

May 12th, 2008

I am seriously considering resurrecting my Halloween Party. It would be a good way to celebrate the renovations and give me a solid date to get the house in shape by. Hope that’s enough time. At the rate construction has (not) been going lately, it may not be.

Halloween is on a Friday this year. As much as I love the promotional idea of “Friday the 31st”, I might do it on Saturday if people from out of town are coming. So I guess I don’t have a solid solid date yet, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.

I figure that gives us four months or so to come up with good costumes and the rest of the time to make it happen, right? Get crackin’, people!

Alien Attack?

March 9th, 2008

So last night I’m watching “Saturday Night Live”, and during “Weekend Update” the satellite signal goes out. This stinks in myriad ways because I’m not watching it live- I’m DVR-slipped by about 40 minutes. I check the rest of the recording, and it’s black.

I check the current sat signal level and it’s 0. Not good. I check all the cable in the house and look out windows to make sure everything’s still attached. Yep. I put on my coat and walk outside to get a better look (winter coat + night shirt = très séduisant) and everything looked fine.

But no signal.

So I figure it must be the weather, although it didn’t look bad out and that doesn’t usually drop me to zero. So I check my weather radar display and it doesn’t show anything. Then I realize that it isn’t showing anything. Wait- I’m not getting satellite TV and I’m not getting weather data from… satellites! Are we under alien attack?!

I did flip through some cable channels, and they seemed to be working, and Headline News didn’t warn me about Martians- though Nancy Grace was on. Why do they show shows on Headline News when they’ve got regular CNN for that? Anyway, nobody else seemed to be having trouble, so I let it ride.

I did have a cable channel go out too, but I’m wondering if someone messed something up because of DST. Besides, channel 4 is often unreliable. And I probably shouldn’t have been trying to watch “Cheaters” anyway.

This morning (well, afternoon, it’s Sunday), I got up and the sat was coming in fine. Like there was never a problem.

Them aliens is sneaky.
