G1G1: ‘Tis the Season

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Got email from Negroponte yesterday telling us (that is, people who have an XO) to flash that thing around to promote the new round of G1G1. I sure will. It’d be nice to see some other machines in my neighborhood for once!

So if you’re in the Purdue area and want to “touch the irresistible green ears” as the man says, let me know. I’ll resume carrying it most everywhere. Maybe I’ll even get it working with the campus wireless network.

Starbucks Envy

Wednesday, December 26th, 2007

Now that some of us actually have XOs in hand, it’s been suggested that a good thing to do is to try to incite some “Starbucks Envy“. It’s easier than I thought.

Just went to Taco Bell for some lunch. I’ve been amused to see how many wireless access points there are around here, so I brought the XO along to see. Once inside the building, I couldn’t see my office Mac anymore, but I could all the way to the door. I didn’t see anything else that wanted to talk to me, but the range is amazing.

Anyway, I’m eating with a friend with the XO out and a guy walks by and says “Hey, you’re not a child!”. Score one for OLPC recognition. I said “Close enough some days. But it is real and it works.”

I guess the campaign is working! As soon as I get a shoulder strap fashioned for the XO, I’ll likely tote it most everywhere. I need to work on a good demo of it to show people that doesn’t rely on the Internet or the mesh. I’ll work on that.

I Love Santa: XO XO

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Came home and there was a box on the porch. My first thought was the pusherman had sent me more DVDs, but then I saw what it was. My XO is here!

I’d planned to post that from the XO for more impact, but people are greatly concerned about delivery dates before Xmas, so I figured I’d pipe up right away. For the record, I made my donation on November 23rd.

I hope the people counting on Xmas delivery get theirs. I wanted mine before then to show my parents (both teachers), but there’s no wide-eyed kid that’d be upset if it didn’t come through. Just one that’d have to spend more time watching all those DVDs the ruthless pusher keeps sending my way.

‘Tis the Season for Giving

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

One Laptop Per Child: Give 1 Get 1The OLPC G1G1 donation offer has been extended. I’ve already donated because I’ve been impressed with Negroponte’s vision and am eager to see how well-implemented it is. Besides, I could contribute software and corrupt mold the minds of a generation.

So, if you need some more charitable donations this year for tax or karmic reasons, you’ve still got a chance to do it too. More importantly, Hiro wants you to. :-)
