Constitution and Bylaws

 ARTICLE I

NAME

The name of this organization is the Purdue Accounting Association.  The name exemplifies the nature of the professional events, but is not necessarily a description of the member’s interest and/or major.  Further explanation can be found in Article III.

 

 ARTICLE II

PURPOSE

The purpose of this organization is to provide a social setting for Purdue students to expand their educational and social boundaries through peer interaction, professional engagements and community service. 

 

 ARTICLE III

DEFINITION OF MEMBERSHIP

Active membership in the Purdue Accounting Association is open to all Purdue University Students from any major.  Furthermore, membership and participation are free from discrimination based on race, religion, color, sex, age, national origin or ancestry, marital status, parental status, sexual orientation, disability, or status as a disabled or Vietnam-era veteran. The club advisor is to be held as a non-student member of the organization, with all rights and privileges therein, except for the right to vote or hold office.  Purdue University staff and faculty are eligible for adjunct membership, which means they may not vote or hold office.

To be considered an active member, one must attend at least seventy percent of the schedule club meetings in the course of a semester and have paid the required club dues.  Any member or officer who fails to meet these requirements will lose all membership privileges, without refund of dues. 

 

ARTICLE IV

OFFICERS

The designated offices are: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Social Chairperson, Secretary, and Webmaster.  Any member is eligible to run for office so long as they have met the active membership requirements for the semester prior to the elections.  Officers may retain power as long as desired, so long as the term does not exceed 6 semesters. 

 

Any officer, with the exception of the president, may be removed from office at any time for poor performance/ attendance or any other reason, with a majority vote between the 5 remaining officers.  The president may only be removed through a unanimous vote by the other officers, at which point the vice president would be promoted to active president with all privileges and responsibilities therein. 

The advisor position is to be held by a Purdue University faculty member.  The advisor may retain their position as long as desired and the selection process will include a survey of applicable candidates by the current officers.  From the list, an advisor will be selected and upon acceptance will become the acting faculty advisor.

 

ARTICLE V

OFFICERS AND DUTIES

President

The president is in charge of the overall smooth running of the organization.  They are responsible for making sure all paper work is turned in on time and that events have been sufficiently organized for each scheduled club meeting.

Vice President

The vice president is in charge, in conjunction with the social chair, of contacting outside parties for events, organizing food for events and assisting the president with the operations of the organization.

Treasurer

The treasurer is in charge of collection of dues and the general management of the club accounts.  Specifically, the treasurer keeps accounts, deposits the organization’s funds, and makes expenditures in a manner approved by the Business Office for Student Organizations.

Secretary

The secretary is responsible for managing member attendance along with sending necessary email and etc. to members, as needed.

Social Chair

The social chair is to work in conjunction with the vice president and other officers to contact and arrange club events.  This includes: organizing transportation to events, ordering food, contacting important people, etc.

Web Master

The role of the web master is to maintain the club web page.  This includes updating the meeting schedule, officer list, etc.

 

ARTICLE VI

Amendments

 Amendments to this constitution and bylaws may only be made by elected officers of the Accounting Association.  In order for a change to be enacted a unanimous consensus, by club officers, must be reached. Furthermore, all amendments to the constitution and bylaws are subject to the approval of the Office of the Dean of Students.  No such amendments may take effect until they have been approved.

  

BYLAWS

Election Procedure

When an office become available only active members may run for the office.  A pool of candidates will be collected, based on nominations from the group.  A person may choose to nominate them self, if desired.  From the pool of candidates all active members, including officers, will receive one equal vote.  The candidate with the highest vote total will win the office.  In case of a tie, the current officers will vote between the tied candidates to determine a winner.  If a tie still persists, the President will break the tie by choosing the candidate they feel is best fit for the office.  Once a candidate has been chosen, the previous officer will be expected to instruct the newly elected member of their duties in the club.

Dues

Dues are expected to be paid, by the specified date, in order for a member to be considered active.  The amount of the semester dues are to be determined at the start of every semester and each member is expected to pay the same amount to the club. 

Amendments to Bylaws

Bylaws are to be amended through the same procedure as noted above for the constitution.

Statement of Jurisdiction

This Constitution and Bylaws are meant to be the governing body by which the Purdue Accounting Association is organized.  Any member or officer who fails to abide by the rules and procedures set forth in this document are subject to dismissal from the organization.  The policies entailed in this constitution are only meant to apply to active members and is not intended to be extended to anyone outside this classification.  This document is void unless signed by all parties below.
