Seminars

ACI-Purdue invites speakers from other universities (professors, researchers) and from the industry (state and federal representatives, engineers, contractors, etc.) to come to Purdue and talk about their profession, the challenges, and the types of students they are looking for to hire. We try to focus on outside speakers to give students a different perspective than what they get from Purdue faculty and staff. Site Visits

ACI-Purdue arranges students visit to construction sites, testing laboratories, and material manufacturer and supplier plants. The goal of these visits is to provide students with a first hand experience on the types of activities that each place is focused on and match what they see to what they have learned previously in the classroom. It also helps students getting familiar with different sections of the industry so they can make a better decision about what they like to pursue as a future career.
In April 2008, we had a visit to Essroc Cement plant in Logansport , IN. This was a unique experience to observe the production procedure of portlant cement. We visited all main sections of the cement plant including raw materials quarry, grinding and blending, kiln, cooling, ball mill operations, and finally packing and shipping.
IMI ready mix plant
Also, we visited IMI mixing plant in Lafayette, IN. We were able to see the day to day operations, which included where the aggregates and cement are stored, how the materials are brought together, how the different admixtures and fibers are introduced to the concrete, and finally how the materials are loaded into trucks. This was a great opportunity to see the scale of operations that go on at a local mixing plant.

Concrete Bench

  • To do our part in giving a helping hand to our community, ACI-Purdue will design and build a bench using concrete as the main building material for the city of West Lafayette. The bench is to be placed along the city’s bike trail near Happy Hollow Park. ACI is always interested in new members willing to contribute. The bench design has been submitted and is currently awaiting approval.
