Our goal is to perform a comparison of STEP AP 203 Edition 2 and the following visualization formats with regard to the "openness" of the format. Metrics will include (but not be limited to) the items below.
- JT
- 3DXML
- U3D
Additional formats may include (as time and resources allow):
- XVL
- Productview
- PLMXML
- Extensibility – What functional “chunks” are included in the file format? For example, this could include cataloguing, design history, 3D annotations, and validation properties. Use the functional chunks that have been incorporated in to the STEP standard as a guide.
- Accessibility – Can the visualization file format be edited directly or not? Does it require an API from the vendor, or can it be done with a simple text editor? Is the format publicly available? These are the kinds of questions to be answered here.
- Interoperability - Can these formats be used to communicate data between CAD systems?
- Security - How secure are these formats?
