Chapter 6
The Nineties

1990-1999

Stealth

The 1990's started Detachment 220 off with George Bush as President declaring war on Iraq. Desert Storm had many effects on the Detachment in the early 90's. Many cadets had parents in the war. Here on the home front, cadets and the University put on a parade around campus, which included Desert Storm veterans. The Detachment itself in Jan of 1990 had Colonel Klusman as Professor of Aerospace Studies until May of 1991. In August of 1991 Colonel Oderman became the PAS until May of 1995, when he was replaced by the current Professor of Aerospace Studies Colonel Richard O. Fanjoy. Besides Desert Storm, the Detachment saw major events around the world take place.

Organizations

ARNOLD AIR SOCIETY

Arnold Air Society is a professional, honorary, service organization advocating the support of aerospace power. Its objectives are to:

o to create a more efficient relationship among Air Force Officer candidates, in
particular within the AFROTC
o to aid in the development of effective Air Force officers
o to further the purpose, traditions, and concepts of the United States Air Force

Arnold Air Society affords its members an excellent opportunity for command experience. In its administrative aspects, the Society offers many opportunities for work and valuable training for the active member. Within the Society, cadets find fellowship and become acquainted with many of the officers in the AFROTC program. The Society, through its participation with the Air Force Association, aids members in gaining an understanding and appreciation of aerospace power for national security. Finally, the Society, through its meetings and other activities, develops a valuable 'esprit de corps.' Such a group consciousness among its members, coupled with the improved officer/cadet relationship fostered by the Society, leads directly to a stronger, more efficient Cadet Wing.

The Fall 1994 Pledge Class

The Fall 1994 Pledge Class

Arnold Air Society has been very active in the 1990's. Each year, they have a pledge class of fourteen or fifteen cadets on average. This allows them to participate in many service projects around the community. Also, they are very active within the wing itself. One annual event that AAS sponsors is the POW-MIA Vigil, which serves to remind the Purdue campus of the brave men and women who have endured many hardships for ensuring our freedom, many of whom never returned home.

ANGEL FLIGHT SILVER WINGS

Angel Flight Silver Wings

The main objectives of Angel Flight Silver Wings are:

1. To aid in the progress and mission of the Arnold Air Society.
2. To advance and promote interest in the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps program at the university level.
3. To familiarize AnF-SW members with the purposes, traditions, and concepts of the United States Air Force.
4. To provide an opportunity for AnF-SW members to become better informed about the national defense institutions and the aerospace world without the prerequisite of a military career commitment.
5. To create a fellowship among AnF-SW members through service to the university and the community.
6. To aid in the character growth of the individual Angel Flight-Silver Wings members.

The Arnold Air Society and the Silver Wings Society are both involved with many service projects. Arnold Air Society participates in a national project that has a different theme every year. This year's project was teaching kids safety at the American Red Cross building in Lafayette. Every year The Silver Wings Society puts on a Christmas party for the children of married students living on campus.

Detachment Events

In the 1990's the cadet wing enrollment on average has been around 115 each semester. This doesn't represent the dramatic decrease the wing has experienced over the past 10 years. Starting out with 194 cadets in 1990 the wing has dropped over 30 percent in size. Currently there are approximately 90 cadets in the detachment. During the 90's we received a new style uniform with a more business like appearance. Hair styles of today are still the same as they were and should always be, standard military!

Current Events in the Nineties

Cadets in front of jet

The longest war in our nation's history, the Cold War, came to a much overdue end, as well as our nation's shortest war in the Persian Gulf. America's tensions are eased, as we breathe a sigh of relief.

California Earthquake

The 1994 Earthquake in Los Angeles, California is the worst earthquake of the
decade. It caused a great deal of destruction throughout the city and left many Los Angeles residents homeless.

United States Air Force Commemorative Stamp

In 1997 the United States Air Force celebrated its 50th Anniversary on September 18. The Air Force was created as a result of the National Security Act of 1947. Pictured above is the commemorative stamp issued by the USPS.

Fireman holding baby at OKC bombing

The blast that shocked the world. On the morning of April 19, 1995 in Oklahoma City, OK a bomb went off destroying the Federal Building and killing 168 people, some of who were children. Because of the shock the media went into full gear. Country Star-Garth Brooks gave a benefit concert to help the families who lost loved ones in the OK bombing. Timothy McVeigh, who bombed the building, was sentenced to death on June 2, 1997.

Mark McGuire

Mark McGwire hit 70 home runs breaking Roger Maris's record of 61 set in 1961. Sammy Sosa broke the record as well but couldn't catch up with BIG MAC, ending the season with 66 home runs

UN armored vehicle

For years, Bosnians and Serbians fought a terrible war that led to unimaginable suffering of its citizens and eventual intervention from the UN. In 1999 fighting escalated in Kosovo, of the same region, and NATO forces took action to try and establish peace.

Happy Anniversary Det 220!

This year we celebrate fifty outstanding years of AFROTC here at Purdue.
