Katie Meyer
India, Summer 2001

My name is Katie Meyer and I went to India for three months in the summer of 2001. I was a little nervous to go at first just because I had never done anything like this before in my life. I was looking at it as an adventure though. As an adventure there were some good and bad parts.

I'll begin with what I liked. First was the overall cultural experience and the general knowledge that I got about another part of the world. It was so neat to go over there with all these stereotypes in my head and find some of them true and some of them far from it. The people that I met and lived with were great also! I met people from all over the world and got to hang out with them and get to know them. Another wonderful part was the traveling that I got to do on weekends. India is a beautiful place (once you get out of the city) and I never knew that! I was so happy to travel around and get to see things that I would have never ever seen in my life if I hadn't have made the trip.

Like I said there were also some parts of the trip that were not so good in themselves, but looking at the experience as a whole, they made it very exciting. One thing that I didn't like was that I didn't have anywhere to live when I got there. I was bounced around from place to place and I just wanted to get settled and stop living out of my suitcase. A second thing that bothered me was sometimes my job was very boring and for the most part I didn't do anything productive. I would have liked to have a better understanding of what I would and would not do.

Overall I would not change the experience that I had for anything. It was such a great time for me to learn about myself, about another part of the world, another culture, and just so much more!
