5th Kyu
- Who is Aikido Kaiso (Founder)? Write about his life and accomplishments.
- Who are the descendants of Ueshiba Morihei Kaiso and what is their role in Aikido?
- What is reigi, and why is it important?
- What is the role of uke and of nage in training?
- What is kuzushi, and why is it important to training?
- What is zanshin, and why is it important to training?
4th Kyu
- What is Aikido?
- Write about your lineage in Aikido.
- Write about the meaning of sempai and kohai, and what it means to you.
- What is kata, and how does it fit in training?
- Write about the progression of kuzushi, tsukuri, kake.
- What qualities do you strive to develop in your training?
- Be able to fold a hakama.
3rd Kyu
- Write about a few of the various styles of Aikdo. What style is this dojo?
- Write about the differences between Budo and Bujutsu.
- What is ma-ai, and why is it important to consider in training?
- Write about the responsibility of the student to the dojo, and the dojo to the student.
- Write about the history/development of Aikido.
2nd Kyu
- Write about the concepts of kokyu and kokyu ryoku.
- Write about the concept of musubi, and how it affects your training.
- Write about the relationship between and responsibilities of sempai and kohai.
- Write about zanshin in training and what it means to you.
- Write about the history/development of Aikido Hombu Dojo and the Aikikai.
1st Kyu
- Write about the ideas of Shu, Ha, Ri, and how they relate to your training.
- What is the role of uke in training and of nage in training? What qualities are important for each?
- What is kansha, and how does it relate to training?
- Write about the various roles of dojo members (sensei, sempai, kohai) and how they interact with each other.
- Discuss training- what is important, how does one develop, etc.
Shodan
- What is Shodan?
- What is Aikido?
- Write about shoshin.
- What responsibilities do we, as practitioners of Aikido, have to the dojo, to each other, and to Aikido itself?
Nidan, Sandan, Yondan
- An essay to submit to Aikido World Headquarters. Topic to be determined by the Chief Instructor.
