Frequently Asked Qestions
Why is the name of the organization so long? Phi Eta Sigma was founded as a freshman honor society designed to promote academic achievement among male students. Alpha Lambda Delta was originally founded as an honor society strictly for girls at the University of Illinois in 1924. A chapter was founded at Purdue University in 1926. In 1979, Alpha Lambda Delta became a co-ed national honor society. Each of these societies operates separately at the national level. However, both Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma operate as one entity on the Purdue University campus, as well as many other campuses across the nation. Is this a legitimate national honor society? There are so many national honor societies to choose from. We can assure you that Alpha Lambda Delta Phi Eta Sigma is legitimate. It has over seventy-five years of rich history at hundreds of universities across the country. Only the brightest students are offered membership each year. In addition, the Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Societies are both long-standing members of the Association of College Honor Societies. What are the membership requirements? First of all, you must be a first-year student at the university. Secondly, you need to earn a 3.50 GPA during your first or second semester in attendance. Freshman transfer students from institutions that do not have an Alpha Lambda Delta Phi Eta Sigma chapter, to be eligible for membership, must have the required Alpha Lambda Delta Phi Eta Sigma grade point average on the courses taken during the first full circular period in the institution to which they transfer. In addition, the cumulative average of the grades of the student's transfer credits combined with the grades in the institution in which the student is currently enrolled must equal the Alpha Lambda Delta Phi Eta Sigma academic grade requirement What if my GPA drops below a 3.50 after I become a member of Alpha Lambda Delta Phi Eta Sigma? While we do encourage members to maintain academic excellence throughout their time at Purdue, students are not required to maintain their GPA after they have been initiated. After you have been inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta Phi Eta Sigma you are a lifetime member. How much do I need to pay in membership dues? Membership dues are $50.00. If I join Alpha Lambda Delta Phi Eta Sigma as a lifetime member, will I be ineligible to join other national honor societies? No, you are certainly free to join other honor societies. You are allowed to be a member of Alpha Lambda Delta Phi Eta Sigma and a member of other honor societies. Is there a pledge week similar to the initiation into the Greek system? There is an optional banquet that follows the initiation ceremony, as well. As a member of Alpha Lambda Delta Phi Eta Sigma am I required to participate in service projects and chapter events? We do encourage our members to become involved in the various service projects and activities of the chapter, but we do not require attendance.
