Alpha Chi Omega Traditions
The History...
We were founded on Oct. 15, 1885 at
Depauw University in Greencastle, In. Seven women
from the school of music came together in a common
bond. Our open motto "Together Let Us Seek the
Heights" lead our sorority to over 130 campuses
of higher learning.
The Lyre Badge...
The Lyre is
symbolic of our original founding with music. From
Greek mythology, it is a uptica or a harp. It was the
first instrument played by the gods. Our badge is
worn with formal attire.
The Coat of Arms...
This is a symbol of
sisterhood that has deep meaning to the members of
Alpha Chi Omega. It is fashioned in prominent places
in our chapter house.
The New Member Pin...
This pin is
presented to the women who decide to become a sister
in Alpha Chi Omega. It is worn exclusively during
pledgeship and then is worn along with the Lyre Badge
after initiation.
The Colors...
Our
colors are olive green and scarlet red. These colors
represent the autumn founding of our fraternity. In
the early years, members were not recognized by their
badge, but by their colors.
The Flower...
The flower of Alpha Chi
Omega is the red carnation, which exemplifies the
colors of our sorority.
The Symphony...
To see
beauty even in the common things of life, to shed the
light of love and friendship around me, to keep my
life in tune with the world that I shall make no
discords in the harmony of life, to strike on the
lyre of the universe only the notes of happiness, of
joy, of peace; to appreciate every little service
rendered; to see and appreciate all that is noble in
another, be her badge what it may, and to let my lyre
send forth the chords of love, unselfishness
sincerity. This is to be my symphony. - Celia McClure
