A vocabulary (set of categories) can be supplied for users to tag their posts with (see Kairosnews posts for an example).

You can

• Try a sample vocabulary which has already been created.
  • Go to the taxonomy module in administer >> categories .
  • Select edit vocabulary to the right of "Forums" in the the list of categories.
  • If you don't like "Forums," you can give the vocabulary a new name (e.g., "Class Discussion")
  • Check the boxes beside the Types of content you want the vocabulary to be available for.
  • Note that the Required checkbox controls whether or not users have to pick a category term when posting.
  • Submit your changes.

  Now whenever a site user creates a post of one of the selected types, this set of terms (category items) will be available for them to tag their posts.

You can also

• Add terms (category items) to an existing vocabularly or edit existing terms at adminster >> categories.
• Create a new vocabulary via adminster >> categories.

Note: forums use categories, but those categories may be more fully configured at administer >> forums. Note that the forum module in this installation is "off" by default. If you want to activate forums, check the box next to the forum module at administer >> modules.

In conjunction with categories, teachers may want to use one of the following modules

• Taxonomy_dhtml. Includes a category listing page and option of enabling blocks for specific category sets (vocabularies).
• Taxonomy_browser. Provides a category search page.
• Taxonomy_menu. Can be used to create menus like the main navigation menu based on a category set (vocabulary).

Each of these modules can be enabled in administer >> modules. Once enabled, check administer >> settings for links to configuration options for the modules.
