Week 9: Kyle Clements and Tim Juchiniski (The Matrix)

The Matrix
Obviously everyone watched the movie today in class and most people have seen the entire thing at some other time. Please leave your thoughts or comments about the movie in addtion to following questions:
1.What does the Matrix tell us to be wary of?
2.How does the Matrix utilize the concept of reality?
3.Does the overall plot of the Matrix seem possible?
4.In your opinion, would the creation of AI be a good idea? Could it help or harm humanity?

I think the Matrix tells us not to take anything, especially our surroundings, for granted. You probably won't discover that our world is a computer program, but when you're observant and you take the time to see how things work, you'll be surprised at what you find. The Matrix does something cool with reality by putting an actually smaller but seemingly equal in scale reality inside the actual reality. I'm not sure if that made sense, but it sounded cool in my head. I think pretty much anything is possible, and AI would be good to a certain extent.

I was really pleased when you guys picked the Matrix as your week assignment. The Matrix(excluding the sequels) is one of my favorite movies. The Matrix does a good job in conveying the idea that what might look real might be not. It is just fun to think "what if our lives were not real" once in a while. The idea of that the world we are living in is not real , in the Matix, is Excellent but the idea that the real world is the earth in the future with machines using humans as power resources is not even "ok".
Until now, scientists could not(and will not) discover all the human brain functions. Humans were given this unique brain to be special. The brain is not ment to be reproduced. Also, no matter how smart robots get, they will only do what they are programmed to. Unless the robot is programmed to be violent or have the potential of commiting violent behaviour, it will never be dangerous

As the Matrix portrays it, if AI existed, it would somehow become smarter than us and over take the world as we think we know it. That is why, as the movie says, we should be wary of AI. The movie's concept of reality shows us that we may not living life in true reality. Reality in itself is a highly debateable word (remembering our first english assignment), and the Matrix is definately a variation of reality. The Matrix plot in itself seems unlikely, but the idea alone of another reality existing could be possible; we ourselves can never really know for sure. And as for AI in the future, it seems like it is a far way away so there is plenty of time for debate over the issue. In my opinion, we as people are too complex to be ever replicated into a machine. However we may get close enough to create perhaps psuedo-AI(if that makes any sense).

I really liked the clip of the Matrix but sadly I have not seen the whole movie (I am going to this weekend)! From what I can tell, the Matrix is telling us to be aware of technology. The Matrix seem to pass the point where we starting caring more about technology than people. The Matrix seems to mess with the term realilty completely. It seems in the movie that no one could ever know what the "real world" truly is or when they are in a computer generated world. I don't believe that we will ever create AI to the extend that the movie seems to portray. The brain and other parts of the body are so amazing and science can't explain many of the functions. I don't think that we are meant to understand exactly how it works (hence the miracle). I think we will improve our technology on robots (and other sorts of AI) but I don't think that we will ever be able to reproduce the brain exactly.

Basically my title sums up my thoughts about the movie in general. It seems The Matrix is telling us to be wary of Artificial Intelligence. This is somewhat obvious because they portray the humans as (basically) slaves that are ruled over by the AI machines. Then again, the humans are "grown," so humanity has become, more or less, a plant. Used for powering the AI machines, humanity as a free species is virtually extinct. The concept of reality does play a part here. Everyone in the matrix believes they are in the real world when they are not. However, they don't know they aren't in the real world, so they cannot distinguish between the two. The plot of The Matrix seems a little drastic. If an AI were created it would probably be fairly hard for it to "take over the world" with some AI buddies without getting noticed along the way and thus destroyed. The creation of AI would be a good idea as far as trying to get somewhere with technology. As far as it helping humanity, we would have to think long and hard before we let a computerized brain do the thinking for us.
