The Ranger Costume
Faramir's main costume is his ranger outfit. It consists of quite a few elements. The different layers are as follows: offwhite or light tan tunic (shirt), rust colored pants, green sleevless surcoat, leather silver embossed curiass (also known as a gambeson), brown upper arm pads, Gondorian embossed tree arm bracers, gloves, boots and a green cloak. In some pictures (though barely seen in the movie) he is also seen wearing a coat, somewhat like the surcoat. His known weapons consist of a Gondorian sword and long bow.
Starting with the tunic, it has lacing & grommets in the middle that starts almost level with the bottom of the arm pits and goes to the top of the shirt. There is another layer of fabric that is shaped around this for asthetic and durability purposes. This layer is shaped like a "u" with the top of the "u"making a half circle around to the back of the neck (you can see this in the close-ups in the pictures below). Then there are grommets (likely gold in color) that run the length of the under side of the arm and stops at the wrist. This is to allow for easy adjustment in practical situations. The sleeves of the tunic are quilted with two lines of stitching together intead of one as on Eowyn's waist cincher.
The pants are tapered and the shirt is tucked into them. The pants are tucked into the shoes. The pants seem to be pretty basic much like medieval pants with the front having a flap for you know what... (like boxers etc.).
The sleveless surcoat has three basic ties made of little rope yellowish in color. The ties are reinforced on the tunic with somewhat half square "A" shaped peices over the place where the ties are stitched to the surcoat. The surcoat has a slit in the sides wich have grommets from the arm hole to the top of the hips (the slits extend the length of the surcoat). The back has a slit which goes up as far as the middle of the butt. The surcoat itself extends to midcalf. The top of the boots are half hidden by the surcoat. The surcoat seems to be made of a very thick, durable material like canvas, cotton duct or twill etc.
The curiass has 2 colors of leather. The darker in the front tapers toward the bottom while 3 other strips of the same color tim the sides (front and back) and the neck. In the middle of the neck tim is a triangle of the same color with an etched star (same as seen on the bracers). The sides have 4 metal rings, gold in color, which attach to the curiass by leather somewhat half square"A" shaped dark leather peices. There is a matching "modesty" panel of leather behind the laced rings, like a bodice only attached on both sides. The back has a slit in it about 2 or 3 inches long. Starting at the middle of the neck down to about level with the top of the shoulder pads is its length.
The arm pads are made of either heavy cotten etc. or leather (probably leather) and are laced underneath the arm. They have "V" quilting on them. His gloves are dark leather and the bracers are almost the same as Boromir's (which Aragorn wears after he dies) except the points are cut off and the etchings are not painted over with silver. interesting to note that also the overlayer of the bracers are green and the under peice is dark brown. The cloak has a hood and two dark leather half square "A" shaped peices with metal triangle loops on them that tie with a dark leather braided cord. It has tattered edges for "effect" and to show use. The rarely seen shirt/surcoat is of the same color and fabric as the upper arm pads and has two visible (maybe more) double triangle loops down the front which is open. It is trimed in another leather. There are few pictures of this so we don't know what exactly it looks like.
