Should I "Go Greek?"
In-Depth FAQ
»Is ATΩ a Reputable Fraternity?
Yes, as a National Fraternity
ATΩ was the first national fraternity ever founded. ATΩ was founded in 1865 with the noble ambition of reuniting the Northern and Southern states after the Civil War. As such, we've been around a while, and have an extensive network of Alumni. No matter where you go in the world, you'll find ATOs there.
Additionally, ATΩ prides itself in being the first fraternity to ever:
· found chapters in both the North and South.
· found a renown leadership development program that is still yet to be matched, called LeaderShape.
· found a substance free chapter.
Yes, as a Chapter
The Gamma Omicron Chapter of ATΩ located at Purdue University has a long record of
· Academic Excellence, regularly exceeding the all-men GPA; generally within the top 5 GPAs of all fraternities.
· Athletic Excellence, historically scoring high in intramurals.
· Leadership Excellence: our chapter regularly receives excellence awards from our National Fraternity for the management of financial, human, and other resources.
»What is Substance-Free Living?
The Definition
Substance-Free living means that no drugs, including alcohol and tobacco, are allowed to be consumed or stored on the Chapter property. It does not mean that you cannot choose to drink or smoke if you are legally able to do so; it simply means you may not do so in the Chapter house.
What are the Advantages of Substance-Free Living?
Having a substance free chapter house is a great advantage! It empowers each member to make his own lifestyle choices while allowing a great range of activities.
· Living in a substance free house means living in a quieter house. You'll be able to sleep that night before your big exam, even if it is a Thursday night!
· If you don't drink, you won't be subjected to alcohol in our chapter house- ever! Also, your dues will not go toward buying alcohol!
· Our drinking-aged members still have plenty of opportunities to drink outside of the house at official ATΩ functions, but these functions are not mandatory. Check the rest of this FAQ for more information.
Can I Still Drink and Have Fun?
We do not equate "drinking" with "having fun." We choose to focus on developing a meaningful brotherhood, instead of focusing on alcohol. But yes, all members who are of legal age may drink or smoke, just not at the Chapter house. Furthermore, our Chapter regularly holds BYOB social events with other Fraternities (in their houses) that comply with all IFC standards and regulations.
»What does "Based on Christian Principles" mean?
Our name, ATΩ derives from Scriptural accounts that the beginning and the end are brought together in Christ, represented by the cross, or the Greek letter Tau.
We can confidently assure you that because of our Christian roots, no ritual, pledge, or other membership activities will ever conflict in any way with any faith. You will not be forced to learn of Greek myths or rituals. We do not, however, force the Christian religion on any member, but all of our brothers agree to abide by Christ's teachings of love in order that we may build a brotherhood based upon eternal and immutable principles, with a bond as strong as right itself and as lasting as humanity... for the elevation of man.
»What's Your Social Life Like?
We Regularly Co-Host Wet Functions.
BYOB Parties - Our chapter house is completely substance free, but we do regularly have joint BYOB parties with other fraternities (in their houses) in accordance with IFC regulations. These functions, however, are never compulsory, and since they're not at our house, you miss out on all that "fun" stuff, like being kept awake the night before that big exam, or having your property damaged or stolen.
Apartment Parties - Our out-of-house senior members semi-regularly hold smaller, more intimate apartment parties for our drinking-age members.
Tailgating - We tailgate for almost all home football games. All brothers are welcome to attend, and brothers over the age of 21 are welcome to bring their own beer.
Football Buddies - We team up with a sorority as football buddies each year. In addition to tailgating with them and then heading off to the football game with them, we hold dry functions and game-days at the house with them.
And We Host Dry Functions.
We do occasionally hold non-alcoholic functions at our chapter house. These enable all of our members to have fun in a way that won't leave them feeling sick the whole next day.
Some of our more popular events include the sorority-hit Oscar Night and our annual Rootbeer Kegger and Kool-Aid Pong Tourney!
»What is Your Brotherhood Like?
"I love and respect all my brothers." That's more than a mantra- it's a fact at ATΩ. Instead of focusing on partying or alcohol, our primary focus is our brothers.
In addition to formalized brotherhood events, including Poker Tournaments, Camping Trips, Movie Nights in our movie room or on the front lawn, our Windsor, Canada Trip, and many more, we regularly hold spontaneous video game tournaments, Nerf gun battles, and outdoor sports games with each other.
The love and loyalty you will find in the ATΩ brotherhood is unsurpassed. Our brotherhood goes beyond a superficial "knowing" each other into a deep trust and friendship based in service to one another. Whether you intend for it to happen or not, these men will truly become your very best friends for life.
»What's Pledgeship Like?
We Absolutely Do Not Haze!
Two of the principles that ATΩ is founded upon are that we should teach, not politics, but morals and foster, not partisanship, but the recognition of true merit. We extend these principles to pledgeship. You don't want to be humiliated or degraded or forced to do undignified activities, and we have no interest in humiliating, degrading, or robbing our future brothers of their dignity.
We don't gain enjoyment from making you feel bad about yourself or by putting you down. We're far more interested that you develop into the type of brother we want you to be- a responsible man who can lead, as well as work and play well together with others. Because of these principles, if there's ever an activity that you're uncomfortable with (which there never should be), feel free to decline- it won't affect your eligibility for membership at all.
It is Leadership Development Training.
As a pledge, you are our future brother, barring any unforeseen circumstances. As such, we want to allow you to experience what our lives are like as brothers, and we want to prepare you to be the man you need to be in order to help better our fraternity.
Our pledgeship program focuses heavily on instilling leadership, accountability, brotherhood, and responsibility within each member of your pledge class. This won't always be easy or fun. You'll never have to do anything degrading, but participating with brothers in house cleanings, as well as doing a pledge class house improvement project, and participating in social and leadership development projects should not be unexpected.
»What Leadership Opportunities are Available?
Being part of the Greek system is a huge advantage regardless of which house you decide to join. The Greek system has several councils and boards which offer leadership opportunities.
Many leadership opportunities are available within our chapter. If you take full advantage of all the opportunities offered, some day you may be able to strengthen your resume with the fact that you've been the Treasurer or President of a $50,000+ organization; or perhaps that you were Vice President and managed several other subordinate officers, or even that you single-handedly planned an entire fraternity's social life for a whole semester! The opportunities are endless (PR, HR, social, philanthropy, house-management, athletics, alumni relations, and more), and if you want to leave your mark on ATΩ, you'll have a chance to.
Also, the ATΩ National Fraternity is renowned for its leadership programs. All brothers will have the opportunity to attend one or several life-changing leadership summits hosted by ATΩ National. No other fraternities have been able to match ATΩ's leadership initiatives!
»Do You Host Philanthropies?
We Host SuperMarket Spree
Each year we host the sorority-hit philanthropy, SuperMarket Spree, which emulates the popular 1980's television show. SuperMarket Spree regularly raises $3,000-$5,000 for Lafayette Urban Ministries.
We Participate in Others' Philanthropies
We also participate in many philanthropies hosted by other Greek organizations. One the most renown philanthropies we participate in is Big Man On Campus, hosted by Zeta Tau Alpha in order to increase breast cancer awareness. We regularly rank within the top 5 fraternities for the amount of money that we raise to help combat breast cancer.
ATΩ offers many other opportunities for community service and other philanthropies.
»What's Your House Like?
Clean
Our chapter house is a rarity among fraternities: it is both clean on the inside and beautiful on the outside. All bedrooms are also carpeted.
An Historical Landmark
Our chapter house is officially an historical landmark. It is beautifully crafted on the outside, and wonderfully spacious, yet cozy on the inside.
Convenient
Our house is literally a minute-and-a-half walk from academic campus, and even closer to at least two university dining courts. Our electrical system can handle room air-conditioners, so you won't have to deal with the heat. All rooms are equipped with complimentary high-speed internet, WiFi access, and ceiling fans.
Full of Awesome Rooms
Our house contains a full-featured mini-Movie Theater, a Game and Award Room including pool and blackjack tables, a spacious basement featuring Foosball and Table-Tennis, a large and quiet study room, and a large common formal room that's great for sitting and talking.
