Interview with Carlos

Tell us something about your research project.

My research deals with fabricating fibers made of a natural polysaccahride called carrageenan and encapsulating them with antimicrobial essential oils  to inhibit the growth of food spoilage microorganisms.

What is a cause you are passionate about?

I am passionate about using my talents and knowledge to make an impact in providing healthy foods for our country.

How did you get involved with BGSA?

BGSA members like Tyrell Connor, Shana Hardy, and Kadari Watson were mentors to me during the 2013 Purdue Summer Research Opportunities Program. When I enrolled at Purdue in Fall 2014, I was immediately involved.

Finish this sentence, “The world would be a better place if…”

people realized our purpose in life is to love.

What’s one piece of advice you can give to fellow Black graduate students pursuing advanced degrees?

You have all tools to be successful at Purdue University and in your career! Believe in yourself! Luck didn’t get you this far, you did! AGGIE PRIDE!!!
