Keturah Nix – President

Keturah NixKeturah C. Nix is a doctoral candidate in American Studies. This Montgomery, Alabama native graduated Magna Cum Laude from Tuskegee University with her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and earned her Master of Arts degree in American Studies from Purdue University. Keturah is currently a Graduate Lecturer in the African American Studies and Research Center and a Library Assistant for the Purdue Black Cultural Center. Her current research investigates the preservation of African American achievement in national public memory using literary, archival, and cultural analysis to examine commemorative memorabilia. Her other research interests include: Black Intellectualism and Leadership; Nineteenth and Twentieth Century African American Literature and Culture; and, Racial Uplift Politics. As a long-standing member of BGSA, Keturah has served as Secretary, Historian, and Banquet Chairperson. In each role, she utilized a mantra she created in high school that has served as inspiration: “In order to be tomorrow’s leader, I must first be today’s servant.” Serving BGSA has given her the opportunity to develop life-long friendships and connections – something she envisions for her future BGSA family members.

Brandon Sells – Vice Presidentimage being cropped

Brandon is a second year M.S. student in the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics from Tyaskin, Maryland. He received his B.S. from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Mechanical Engineering and holds a passion for aerospace design. Brandon’s interests are in Aerospace System Design and Optimization and how design methodologies can address aircraft sizing and mission objectives concurrently to produce efficient aircraft systems. From designing home-built radio-controlled airplanes to leisure kit-flying, his head is in the clouds. Brandon enjoys meeting new people and expanding his personal and professional networks. Leveraging the leadership and organizational skills from his Eagle Scout journey, he is committed to service BGSA, Purdue, and the Lafayette community.

James is a third year Ph.D. student in the School of Engineering Education. Originally from Detroit, Michigan, James has received a B.S. from Tuskegee University and a M.S. from Michigan State University, both in Mechanical Engineering. His research interest is exploring formal and informal K-12 engineering education learning contexts. Specifically, he is interested in how the engineering design process can be used to emphasize the humanistic side of engineering and investigating how engineering habits of mind can enhance pre-college students’ learning abilities.

Ulyssa Hester, a native of Atlanta, GA, is a 2nd year MS student in Ecological Sciences and Engineering Interdisciplinary Graduate Program with a focus in Biogeochemistry. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University. Ulyssa’s research interests for future doctoral study include environmental science education for underserved minority students, youth development and environmental justice. She enjoys volunteering in the Graduate K-12 Program and with various programs and in workshops designed to prepare students for undergraduate and graduate studies. She also serves on BGSA’s Undergraduate Outreach Committee, which aims to help undergraduate students prepare for various aspects of graduate school. In her free time, she enjoys playing with her dog, Tifa, using her homemade crochet dog toys.

I’m a 3rd year student at the College of Veterinary Medicine. I’m from Atlanta, GA and I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Spelman College. My goal is to become a veterinary pathologist and either pursue a career in pharmaceutical research or zoonotic disease prevention. An interesting fact about me is that I’ve traveled to 23 countries, and counting 🙂

Temitope Adeoye – Undergraduate Outreach Chair

Although Temitope (Temi) Adeoye was born and raised in Illinois, she completed her undergraduate degree in Baltimore, MD which she frequently refers to as home. Taking the skills learned from her psychology degree, Temi is now a PhD student in Educational Psychology. Upon completing her program, Temi aims to gain tenure at an HBCU and serve as a program director for one of the institution’s retention initiatives. Stemming from her passion for motivational research, Temi views her role as Undergraduate Outreach Committee chair being to establish BGSA as a resource and mentor organization for undergraduate students.

Interesting fact: Temi is a member of a royal family in Kwara State, Nigeria.
