Hi Everyone,

At yesterday’s BMEGSA meeting I spoke briefly about starting a student chapter of the Society for Biomaterials (SFB), and I am very excited that some of you were interested! Just to recap (and in case you were not able to attend), SFB is the premier society for biomaterials researchers with members spanning academia, government, and industry. In addition to adding another line to your CV, forming/joining a student chapter of SFB has many benefits.

· Due to the biomaterials focus of the society, it will provide you with better networking opportunities than other societies.
· You will have the opportunity to get involved on the national level. Student members get a discounted registration rate for SFB conferences, and are eligible for travel awards to help get you there (I went to the national meeting in April, and it was a great experience!).
· It will provide professional development opportunities. At the national meeting there numerous sessions that will benefit students interested in both academia and industry. We will also have a faculty mentor, as well as an industry mentor that will help establish our chapter (someone from DePuy has already expressed interest in this).
· It will lead to better departmental recognition. We have lots of great biomaterials research going on at Purdue, and forming a student chapter of SFB and getting involved is an easy way for us to draw attention to that and help benefit our program.

If you are interested in helping to establish our chapter, please respond to this email. It only takes three students to start a chapter, but I am sure we can do better than that. If you know of anyone else that might be interested, please forward this email to them as well. The chapter would be open to undergrads too, so if you have any working in your labs feel free to let them know too!

Thanks,
Daniel L. Alge
