Before we left for Britain, while we were making our outline itinerary,
Sonya discovered this place called Fountains Abbey. Since it is halfway to Scotland, we decided to stop and check it out on our trip north.
We left our room on The Wirral and drove the M roads for a few hours, then stopped in Harrogate, just north of Leeds, to wash clothes.
Next door to the laundrette was a nice pub named the Claro Beagle. Lunchtime was over, so the place was nearly deserted, but was very nice, clean, well-decorated and
had a pleasant atmosphere. We ate while our clothes dried, then went next door and picked them up.
Then we continued on to Fountains Abbey. It is a huge grounds with many gardens and an old abbey in the midst of them.
It was a pleasant sunny day and we spent it leisurely walking the grounds. Though some of the fixtures appear in need of some tending, it was an enjoyable walk and I would go there again.
Finally we were ready to leave and headed for Whitemare Pool, outside of Newcastle, to stay the night at a Travelodge. We had started getting used to there being Travelodges at our destination and we
decided against a B&B again. The main thing was to be positioned for the hunt for Hadrian's Wall the next day, which begins at Newcastle.
