Day 11 - June 7 - Chesters Roman Fort - Hadrian's Wall

This morning we drove out of Newcastle to see Hadrian's Wall. We drove along the B6318 which parallels the wall, and we could see the wall very well. But it seems we didn't do enough research. Although we could see the wall, there were no places to pull off of the narrow road to walk over to the wall. So we spent some time just driving. Finally we came to Chester's Roman Fort, which was a fort along the wall. There was plenty of parking and a small shop there, and the ruins of the fort were quite impressive.

After visiting the fort, we decided to head up to Edinburgh, as our two weeks were running out. The drive up to Scotland is quite impressive and in some places breathtaking. We encountered the town of Galashiels and decided it was time to stop for lunch. We found a nice pub in the middle of the town though unfortunately I didn't write down the name.
We drove on to Edinburgh and as it was getting a bit late we tried to find a room at a Travelodge. We were driving along the A720 loop road to the south of the city, which has two or three Travelodges. But they were all full this time. One of the Travelodge people suggested we try the Abbey Lodge Hotel which was just off the loop. We followed the directions and arrived at a nice place just north of the loop. The address is:

Abbey Lodge Hotel
137 Drum Street
Gilmerton, Edinburgh, EH17 8RJ
(Tel) 0131 664 9548

We were greeted by the friendly and congenial manager, Terry Baigan. The atmosphere was pleasant, the rooms were nice, and the dining room was also pleasant. As we were the only guests for dinner, we enjoyed conversing with Terry. It was amusing that he was having as much trouble understanding our American accent as we were with his Scotch. But we all tried hard and had a good time. We promised Terry that we would mention his place on our webpage, so here it is. And I highly recommend the Abbey Lodge.

After dinner we walked outside and noticed that there was a housing development up the street, so we took a stroll. It reminded us of similar neighborhoods here in the states, children playing in yards, nice homes with neat yards.
It was getting dark so we walked back to the hotel and turned in for the night.
