We started this day with the intention of visiting Glastonbury Tor. We drove along the road from Pennard to Glastonbury looking for a sign that might direct us to the Tor, but didn't find one. We chanced upon a side road that looked promising and went up a winding hill. But it wasn't the right one. We came back down to the main road and then found another side road.
Again it was an uphill maze of twisting, turning narrow drives with turnoffs here and there. Eventually we found the right turn and ended up at the base of the Tor hill. We parked and climbed a long way up the hill and finally made it. There isn't much to the Tor itself but the view is awesome.
We then proceeded west toward Tintagel and decided to stop in Okehampton which has a quite substantial castle ruin. We ended up staying here longer than expected because the castle proved to be interesting, as well as the surrounding area.
Somewhere along the way we stopped at a Little Chef for lunch. We then continued on to Tintagel. This place is another of those places where I felt a certain 'presence'. It is very hard to describe.
Tintagel was inhabited in stages. Some of these stages are plainly visible. It wasn't just the castle of King Arthur legend. There were many different layers to the visible habitations there. As to what they were, who lived there, and when, I am not qualified to even guess.
After our afternoon visiting Tintagel, we searched for lodging. We finally found it at Trewarmett Lodge very near Tintagel. Our hosts, John and Mary Twitchen, were amiable enough and we sat alone in the bar with John for about an hour discussing many topics. I suspect they are no longer there since they had a yearning to move to France.
