Day 6 - June 2 - Hay-on-Wye, Powys

We got up early and had breakfast at the Burnt House then headed for Hay-on-Wye. Along the road we had to stop and wait for a while. A shepherd and dog were herding some sheep straight up the middle of the road to another pasture. This is not uncommon in rural areas. It took about ten minutes and was interesting to watch. Then we continued on our way. We were excited at the prospect of so many bookstores in one place. We weren't disappointed! Each bookstore was different. Some were no more than tents or bric-a-brac on tables, while others were two-story giants. Among our finds I managed to locate two out-of-print books on the Beatles, which was what I had hoped for. There was also a very nice new-age shop in which I found a CD of some great Celtic music played on a harp. We had lunch at a small fish and chips place which had tables along the sidewalk. How British, we thought. The food was greasy but good. We stayed all day browsing in Hay, and then headed for the nearest Travelodge, which was at Cross Hands, west of Swansea. This is at the junction of A48 and A476. We drove into Swansea to see what it looked like, but not knowing our way or any places to visit there in the evening, we came away with just a drive through the city. We headed back to Travelodge and ate at the Little Chef restaurant adjacent to it and then retired for the evening.
