We left Cross Hands on this dreary morning in hopes of exploring Carreg Cennan, a nearby castle on a high cliff. But it was raining very hard and we decided on a quick drive-by. We wound our way toward Caernarfon in the northwest of Wales, which is quite a roundabout route. Along the way we also missed visiting the Alternative Energy Centre because of the rain. We saw some lovely countryside along the way however.
Just north of the town of Porthmadog we saw an unusual stone circle which we thought might be prehistoric. We later learned it had been erected in 1987 at the National Eisteddfod, an annual gathering of bards.
The weather cleared as we approached Caernarfon and we proceeded to explore the castle. Caernarfon castle is well-preserved and is also the traditional location of the investiture of the Prince of Wales.
We stayed at a B&B in town, Bryn Y Mor, and were entertained by our talkative hostess, Mrs. Vaughan-Wilkinson. We then took the short walk to the town centre and had supper at the Black Boy Inn, then relaxed over a few drinks at the Crown pub.
