Biography

As you go through the various sources you will notice something strange. Ebenezer and Jane's birth state changes back and forth between Delaware and Maryland. i.e. in the 1880 IN Census Jane indicates she was born in Delaware however all her children indicate that their parents were born in Maryland! Another example is the following statement about Ebenezer (maybe an obit?): Ebenezer Fippen b. 17 Dec 1791 in Sussex Co., Delaware. Mr. Fippen was a sailor in early life and moved to Indiana in 1847. Ebenezer was a soldier in the War of 1812. His father was a soldier in the Revolutionary war for seven years under General Washington. Native of Maryland he moved in 1837 to Muskingum county, OH and in 1847 to Hamilton County, IN. So how can Ebenezer by a native of Maryland if he was indeed born in Sussex County, DE???

Part of the answer may be the following: on studying the history of Delaware I discovered that Delaware was once part of Pennsylvania. Maryland and Delaware were "carved" out of Pennsylvannia and in 1774 Little Creek Hundred, Sussex Co., DE was established - it was previously part of Somerset Co, Maryland. Delaware boundaries were firmly established by 1768. (the dates here still don't make sense - I need to do some more research!) In any case boundaries were firmly established by Ebenezer's birth year, but the differences could well come from the fact that the area was previously Maryland???

The following is from "Delaware Archives Military Records (Vol. I-V)" found in Fort Worth Central Library Genealogy Section, GEN 975.1 D

Military Service in War of 1812

on p. 702 in Vol. V there is a Muster fine list for the Delaware Militia - 9th Regiment for 1813 (Captain Wallers Company). On it you find Eben E. Phippen fined $0.67 for failing to show up at muster call. The report is signed by Wm. Ellegood, Lieut. Com. and Jacob Morne, Major

on p. 816 a table starts titled: Return of Detached Militia of State of Delaware - 14 Sep 1814. Turning to p. 822 you find Ebenezer E. Tippen in the 9th Regiment, Infantry. There is also a note that he was detached from 8th Company, Cap. Waller. There is also a couple listings for an Ebenezer E. Touppin in the same company/regiment which are probablly him too (both are payroll lists).
