Blazing
Bullets – Roaring right now but will they carry the momentum into the playoffs?
Fervent
followers of the game believe cricket to be the consummate team game. True to this
belief this young Bullets team is plays the ultimate team game. It is widely
recognized that Ankit Dhawan,
the captain of Blazing Bullets, is probably the best talent scout as far as
indoor cricket at Purdue is concerned. Talk to the grizzled indoor league
veterans you are sure to hear stories of Ankit
lurking around the dorms at the start of each semester unearthing talented and
unknown cricketers at Purdue. This season he has put together a team that
boasts as many as six good bowlers and a roster where none of the batsmen are a
shmuck with the bat.
Blazing
Bullets are currently riding a three game win streak including an upset victory
over the High
Flying Speedsters. This year’s Bullets have undergone a tremendous makeover
from the last season’s North Zone. Dhawan’s teams
have traditionally made it to the playoffs almost every season of the indoor
league but have not been able to match up against the heavyweights like the Overrated
Underdogs, Virtual
Reality and Punjabi Pride come playoff time. This Bullets team has
certainly matured over the last two indoor leagues and is currently playing
their best cricket. But with two tough games still remaining against Virtual
Reality and Overrated
Underdogs the Bullets have their work cut out if they want to finish
amongst the top two teams at the end of the regular season.
Blazing
Bullets have a lot of bowlers that are interchangeable and this gives their
captain Ankit quite a few options. Led by Shiven and Amit this bowling
attack is an overflow of riches with Vaibhav, Paranjape, Ali and Haaris to back
them up. Navroz is another option when in the team.
The only problem with the Bullets bowling attack is that it is a little
inconsistent and most of the bowlers have their off days every once in a while.
But the depth of the attack compensates for the lack of variety and the
inconsistencies that this young attack sometimes experiences.
Amit Paranjape is probably the find of the season for the
Bullets and leads off the batting attack with Ankit Dhawan, an extremely unorthodox yet effective bat. Paranjape is a flamboyant bat with tremendous skill but
tends to get carried off taking one too many chances against the opposition
bowlers. With as many as 5-6 batsmen scoring 40+ runs in their first 5 league
games the bulk of the runs have come off the bats of the two Amits, Ankit, Haaris
and ‘digital’ Ali. Vaibhav and Shiven
have had their days in previous seasons and should come good in one of the
remaining games. It is an interesting challenge for opposition bowlers to bowl
to this Bullets batting line up with most of Ankit
runs coming off very unorthodox sweeps, reverse sweeps and walk down the track
hoicks. The two Amits are more orthodox and tend to
score runs with regular cricketing shots while Haaris
with a distinctly open stance plays mostly to the leg towards the walls. Then comes ‘digital’ Ali who likes to score most of his runs in
4’s and 6’s with huge hits down the field.
To sum
it up, this young Bullets team is fun to watch with a good fielding unit
backing up its bowlers and a batting attack that takes it chances and plays to
entertain.
