Golimaar – Hurt by the job
market, hoping to be the dark horse
Team Golimaar, according to insiders, derives its name from Chiru’s
Tollywood song, a Michael Jackson ‘Thriller’ rip
off with Chiranjeevi doing a gecko style head shake
every time the singer goes ‘GOLIMAAR’. But a song more tailor made to describe
this team is a Bollywood (allegedly entertaining)
song that goes like “Golimaar Bheje mein”. Watching them play, you would think they take
the song too seriously and time and time again shoot themselves in their brains
at crucial junctures. However, their talent and dedication cannot be denied,
and for those reasons, they are now in the playoffs. This team enters the
playoffs as underdogs but can contend for the title if only they could aim some
place other than their own brains. Otherwise, as shall be shown here, they
possess the skill to take on any opposition, and they did put it all together
against Overrated Underdogs and Blazing Bullets, two of the top teams in this
competition.
Golimaar has been an above average team for the past
couple of seasons, but they have not been able to raise their game in matches
that matter the most. However, they do seem to have left behind their “shooting
in the brain” tendencies behind and this season has been a good one for them so
far, and they have already made sure of a spot in the playoffs. Their bowling
is in good hands even though they have lost the services of Abhishek
and Siddharth, to graduation, Neeraj
and Deep provide enough firepower and along with Yash
and Mani, they can trouble any batting lineup. All of them are consistently
among the wickets, with reasonably good economy rates. This season, their
fielding has complimented their bowling and because of which they are able to
restrict the opposition to manageable totals.
Their batting used to be one of their pressure points, and it can still
exhibit the tendencies that live up to their moniker (case in point: the game
against Dhipaadi Dheepang). However,
the presence of Yash, a new recruit, at the top of
the order has provided a calming effect. The others need to learn to bat around
him, even more so now with their top run getter Abhishek
gone, and so far the learning curve is promising. Apart from Yash, Ram, Neeraj and Deep have
been among the runs and this sort of teamwork is what is needed for them to win
a game or two in the playoffs. Supporters of this team just have to hope that
the opportunity to play in the post season games can spark a fire for this
team.
