High
Flying Speedsters - Will second time be a charm?
Of the many talented
teams in our league, the cognoscenti believe the high flying speedsters to be
the first among equals. A heady mix of pace and swing bowling and a deep and
dangerous batting line-up make this team one of the top contenders for the most
sought after cricketing trophy on this side of the Wabash.
Adeel and Aeraj form one of the most lethal opening bowling pairs in
our league. A left hander, Adeel has the uncommon
ability to take the ball away from right handers, even
while bowling around the wickets. The angles that are created pose difficult
questions to the top order batsmen, and more often than not, the result is a
dreaded walk back. The other half of the opening show, Aeraj,
likes to fire the ball into the batsmen’s legs. Just as the poor batsman
decides to play a wristy one, the ball starts to
swerve towards the slips, leaving the stumps shattered or catching the edge of
the bat on the way to the keeper. This opening act is followed by the
steadiness and the accuracy of Saad and Imran, who are adept at picking up the remaining pieces.
For the most part, the quality of the bowling ensures that the batsmen don’t
have too much to chase. However, lest anyone thinks the batting is a pushover,
this team has one of the deepest batting lineups.
At the top of the
order, Faraz combines a good defense with elegance in
stroke-making that is the hallmark of several lefthanders. Waqas
is an attacking and an unconventional batsman who loves to manufacture shots
while Kamran comes in and usually gives the team an
impetus towards the end. These stroke-makers are able to ply their trade,
knowing fully well that in Imran, Saad
and Haroon, they have people who can consistently
rotate strike, and keep the scoreboard ticking in any situation. This is a team
where everyone can contribute with the bat, and that makes them deadly
dangerous.
The speedsters cruised
through to the playoffs without losing a single game last season. Unfortunately
for them, they ran into the two time defending (and eventual) champions, Virtual
Reality . They began the current season with a
resounding revenge over Virtual Reality and apart from a loss to the top seeded
underdogs, have blown away opponents until a surprise loss last week to the
Bullets. As with any good team, we believe they will quickly regroup and come playoffs, they will be ready to make amends for last
season, and go deep.
