New Leadership!

Greetings,

CTL has elected new leaders for the academic year of 2013-14!

  • President: Mary Friedl
  • Vice President: Brian Kadowaki
  • Secretary: Sam Roberts
  • Treasurer: Michael Ehlert
  • Webmaster: Stash Krane

Hope everyone has a great summer!

God bless,

Chris Herring

No Meeting This Week - Good Friday!

Greetings,

There will be no CTL meeting this Friday because it is Good Friday! I strongly recommend that you participate in the Living Stations of the Cross on campus (beginning at 1:00 pm at St. Tom's) and/or in the solemn Good Friday service at 3:00 pm (also at St. Tom's). Have a blessed Triduum and a happy Easter!

God bless,

Chris Herring

This Week's Topic: Priesthood in the Catholic Church!

Greetings,

Join CTL this Friday as we meet at St. Tom's in Room 23 (upstairs) to talk about Holy Orders and the ministerial priesthood in the Catholic Church. I hope to see you there.

God bless,

Chris Herring

This Week: The Sacrament of Reconciliation

Greetings,

The season of Lent has begun! (I am writing this post at about 1:00 am on Ash Wednesday; Lent started an hour ago.) Given that this is a penitential season, a time to "turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel," it is fitting that our topic for this Friday's meeting is the Sacrament of Reconciliation - the incredible gift of God's mercy through which our sins are washed away. Come and learn about this much misunderstood topic from guest presenters Brian Kadowaki and Mary Friedl!

God bless,

Chris Herring

P.S. We'll be meeting upstairs, in Room 23.

Callout This Friday - The Holy Eucharist!

Greetings,

This Friday's meeting is the one you really don't want to miss. The topic is THE HOLY EUCHARIST, the source and summit of the Christian life, the flesh and blood of Jesus Christ, which He gives to us under the appearance of bread in an act of the most stupendous humility. Come learn about this incredible gift, which we, as Catholics, are so blessed to have reserved in every church.

The time and place are 7:30 pm and Room 3, as usual. This is technically the spring callout, so expect pizza.

God bless,

Chris Herring

Meeting This Friday: Abortion

Greetings,

Welcome back to Purdue!! It's January, and the March for Life is approaching quickly. What better time of year is there to get together and talk about pro-life apologetics? Join CTL this Friday (January 18) for a discussion of how to argue that even the youngest, smallest, and most helpless human beings have a right to life. Time permitting, we hope to discuss and refute all the major arguments that are offered in favor of abortion. See you there!

God bless,

Chris Herring

Last Meeting of the Semester: Christmas Caroling!!

Greetings,

Join us this Friday at 6:00 PM as we go CHRISTMAS CAROLING! My understanding is that we will be carpooling to the Indiana Veterans' Home in Lafayette. I'm not sure exactly what the plan is, but we expect to be finished by 9:00 PM so we can also go to FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION at St. Tom's. You should come - CTL Christmas caroling has been a lot of fun in the past, and this is our last meeting for the semester.

I hope everyone has a blessed Christmas break!

God bless!

Chris Herring

This Friday: The Blessed Virgin Mary!

Greetings,

Join us this Friday as we discuss the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus and our Mother. Time permitting, we will be talking about key Marian dogmas (Immaculate Conception, Assumption, Virgin Birth) as well as our relationship with our Lady (Why pray the rosary? Why not go directly to God?). The meeting should take place at 7 pm in Room 3, as usual, God willing. This could be the last normal meeting of the semester, so I expect to see you there!

God bless!

Chris Herring

This Friday's Topic: The Whole Catholic Faith

Greetings,

Yes, you read that right. At this Friday's CTL meeting, we plan to run through a twenty-ish minute overview of the whole Roman Catholic faith and take questions on it. The meeting will be preceded by a "teaching Mass" at 5:30 PM: a Chicago Dominican will be coming to say Mass while explaining the meaning of the components of the Mass as he goes along. I understand that it will be a special Mass - there'll be chant and candle-bearers and so forth. You should definitely come. Please invite friends who aren't Catholic; this event is for them!

IMPORTANT NOTICE - the meeting is supposed to take place directly following the Mass. I'm guessing it will start between 6:15 and 7 PM. If you can't come to the Mass but plan to come to the meeting, you might want to arrive early!

God bless!

Chris Herring

This Friday: BOILER AWAKENING!

Greetings,

The Catholic Truth League will not be meeting this Friday, the 9th. The reason? We don't want to interfere with Boiler Awakening, which begins tomorrow evening. Boiler Awakening is a retreat put on by St. Tom's every semester. Months of often grueling preparation go into it, and students have had their lives touched profoundly by it; so it is kind of a big deal. If you have never been on it, and you are a student, you should go next semester.

I guess it isn't too early to say something about next Friday, the 16th. We will (God willing) be doing something a little different. Join us at 5:30 for a "teaching Mass" - a Dominican from Chicago will be coming to say Mass while explaining the meaning of the various components of the Mass as he goes along. Afterward CTL will travel downstairs to run through an overview of everything Catholics believe (compiled by Brother J.D.) and take questions on it. This event is designed specifically for people who aren't Catholic, so please, please invite your non-Catholic friends to come to the Mass and meeting, or at least to one of the two.

God bless!

Chris Herring

This Friday: Hell and Purgatory!

Greetings,

Join the Catholic Truth League this Friday for a discussion of Hell and Purgatory! This is a very important topic. The Catholic teaching on Purgatory makes our Protestant brothers and sisters very uncomfortable; the doctrine of Hell, meanwhile, is all too often downplayed or denied. That's a real problem, because those who lack a vivid awareness of the reality of Hell are a lot more likely to end up there.

"I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has the power to cast into Hell; yes, I tell you, fear him!" - Luke 12:4-5

Join us this Friday in Room 3 from 7 pm-8:30 pm, as usual.

God bless,

Chris Herring

Movie Night with CTL!

Thanks to the efforts of our secretary Stash, St. Boniface Catholic Church has given the Catholic Truth League 25 FREE tickets to a showing of the new movie "For Greater Glory: The True Story of Christiada." The movie is about the Cristero War, a mass uprising of the Mexican people against their militantly anti-Catholic government, which took place in the early 20th century. The movie is rated R, if anyone wants to know.

The show starts at 7 pm this Friday at the Long Center for the Performing Arts across the river in Lafayette. Those who want to attend will have to arrive early (I'm not yet sure how early, but it could be as early as 6:10 or 6:20 pm) so we can carpool down to the Long Center.

God bless,

Chris Herring

This Friday: Angels, Demons, and Exorcism!

What do Catholics believe about angels? Is there a literal, personal devil? Do people really get possessed by demons? Are there real exorcists out there today?

If you've been wondering about any of these questions, or even if you haven't, you should come to our meeting this Friday, October 19th. The topic will be "Angels, Demons, and Exorcism," as presented by our own Br. James Dominic Rooney. The time will be 7:00 pm, the location St. Tom's Room 3, God willing.

God bless,

Chris Herring

Vote Like a Catholic!

Greetings,

Join CTL this Friday as we discuss the upcoming elections and how to vote in a way that is consistent with our Catholic faith. Fall break has just ended and we are scrambling to get everything ready, but, God willing, we will be discussing the American bishops' guide to Catholic political participation, entitled "Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship," as well as looking at the positions our presidential candidates take on various issues. The location will be St. Tom's, Room 3, and the time 7 pm, as usual.

God bless,

Chris Herring

No Meeting This Friday - Fall Break!

Greetings,

As the title of this post makes clear, there will be no meeting this Friday due to fall break. Hope to see you all the next Friday, October 12th!

God bless,

Chris Herring

This Friday: Guest Presentation on Sexual Morality

Greetings,

Our discussion topic for this Friday is sexual morality. I'm very pleased to announce that we will have a guest presenter: Brian Besong, a Catholic Ph.D. student in philosophy, will be leading our discussion. God willing, we will study Catholic teachings on sex outside marriage, contraception, homosexuality, and more, as well as how to explain and defend these teachings to those who don't share our faith. The Catholic Church gets a lot of flak for these teachings, and everyone should know what to say when they're attacked. Come with questions! I hope to see you all on Friday.

God bless,

Chris Herring

This Friday: Bioethics!

Greetings!

Join CTL this Friday as we discuss BIOETHICS. We'll be meeting at 7 pm, as usual, God willing. The location will be St. Tom's Room 24. Get the Catholic scoop on:

  • In vitro fertilization
  • Cloning
  • Euthanasia
  • Embryonic stem cell research

See you there!

God bless,

Chris Herring

The Existence of God, Round 2

Greetings,

The callout went quite well overall. We had a huge crowd, pizza, and lively discussion. Thanks be to God! Unfortunately (perhaps I should say fortunately), the discussion was so lively that we were only able to talk about a small subset of our topic, namely teleological arguments and the problem of evil. For this reason, we have decided to change the topic of the next meeting to "The Existence of God, Part 2." I apologize for any confusion I caused with the post I made earlier today (now deleted).

God bless,

Chris Herring

Callout This Friday: The Existence of God!

Greetings!

The time has finally come. Join us this Friday at 7 pm as we kick off the new year with our callout. It will be in Room 24 at St. Tom's (not Room 3). Our discussion topic will be the existence of God. Come learn about and share your thoughts on arguments teleological, cosmological, psychological, ontological, and moral, as well as the argument from evil against God's existence. There will be PIZZA! We look forward to seeing you there.

God bless,

Chris Herring

The Ministry Fair; and, No Meeting This Week

Greetings!

As I wrote in the last post, CTL will not be meeting this Friday, due to Labor Day weekend. There will be a meeting the next Friday, September 7; we will be having our callout at 7 pm in Room 3 at St. Tom's, and the topic will be the existence of God.

That's really all I have to say for this week. The St. Tom's pig roast/ministry fair took place yesterday. It was a big success, and quite a few people signed up to be put on our email list, which is exciting. Thanks be to God! We are looking forward to seeing you at the callout.

God bless,

Chris Herring

Start a New Year with Blockbuster Weekend!

Greetings!

As the new school year begins, CTL would like to extend a warm welcome to all returning students, but especially to our freshmen. If you are a Catholic student interested in learning more about why the Church teaches what she teaches, or even if you are not Catholic but just curious, we encourage you to check us out.

Our callout will be on September 7, God willing; we would have had it earlier, but we had to push the date back due to Labor Day weekend. It's a bit early to say for sure, but the topic of that meeting will probably be the existence of God. I'm pretty sure there will be free food.

In the meantime, we invite you to check out our booth at the St. Tom's Ministry Fair, which will take place at St. Tom's this Saturday, August 25th, at 7:30 PM. (There will also be musicians and a pig roast.) This event is part of Purdue Catholic Students' 3-day kickoff, Blockbuster Weekend; see this flyer for more details.

God bless,

Chris Herring

P.S. When I first made this post, I said the first topic would be the Holy Eucharist. I have corrected this, and I apologize for any confusion this might have caused.

Christmas Caroling!

Greetings,

Hopefully you all will be able to get through dead week alive and are ready for some caroling! We are going to be singing Christmas carols at the Veterans Home. Please meet at the church at 6:00PM tomorrow December 9th for rides if you are interested in going. Also if you have a car and are willing to give rides please meet at that time as well and email the CTL account so we can know how many seats we have.

Its been a great year sharing and discussing our faith and I hope to see all of you again next semester. To those who are graduating I hope that you will find success in whatever endeavor that you apply yourself towards.

God Bless,

Daniel Grum

Meeting this Week and Ask a Catholic Day Planned and Social Network Pages

Greetings,

I hope that you all had a great fall break! Just have a couple of announcements. First off this Friday we will be having a meeting at 7:00PM in room 5 which is downstairs at St. Tom's and the topic will be sin and the varying effects of sin. I hope to see you all there as we cover this topic. Also on Thursday October 27th we will be having our first Ask a Catholic Day from 11:00AM to 1:00PM. If you could stop by and be available to answer any questions that may come up please contact me as soon as possible.

We have also begun to expand our social networking pages so if you are having any trouble getting our notices from flocknotes you can always check either our Google group page or our Facebook page. If you have any other suggestions on how we can best communicate with you please email them to CatholicTruthLeague@gmail.com.

No Meeting this Week and Site Update

Greetings,

Tomorrow, for the first time in over a year will not be Friday April 30, and there will be no picnic. Now I know that you guys will be disappointed after over a year of picnics but we unfortunately can't keep up with the demand. All joking aside as you can see the website is getting updated and will continue to be updated throughout the year. On this site you will be able to see any updates to when or where meetings will be held as well as the dates for any special events that we are planning. Throughout the year I will also be adding in some extra features such as the ability to download PDF's of our handouts as well as a forum area.

On another note since this Friday, October 7th, is the start of October break there will be no CTL meeting. The meetings will begin again on October 14th at 7pm. Location and topic have yet to be decided but more information will be posted at a later date.

End of Semester Mass + Picnic

Greetings,

Tomorrow, Friday April 30, we will be meeting at St. Tom's (either Newman Hall or the Main Church, look for signs on the doors) for Mass at 6 PM. Following Mass, we will head over to Pickett Park (Behind co-rec, near intramural fields) for a picnic (~6:45) and can join in a softball game. If you can't make Mass, join us for the picnic!

The end of the year is upon us! As we approach the dreaded finals week, let us come together one last time to end the semester with the greatest prayer our Church can offer, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass! As the Catholic Truth League, we have come together to learn our faith AND to live it! Let us live it out in the Mass, receiving the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of our Lord, the very bread of life, nourishment for our souls, before we head out into the world.

Following Mass, we will head to Pickett Park at ~6:45 (Rain Location - St. Tom's Basement) for physical nourishment in the form of a picnic. We will be providing the burgers, the hot dogs, and the drinks! Feel free to bring any other item(s) you desire (we'll take on-the-go food as well!). Also, as we are at a park, let us have some park fun. We'll have a Frisbee and there will be a softball game (Catholics vs. Protestants) going on right next to us. Feel free to bring anything you'll want to throw, toss, or kick around.

The picnic will end whenever we are all tired out.

It's been a wonderful year and we hope to see you all there! Even if you couldn't regularly attend the meetings, feel free to join us for prayer, fun, and fellowship!

In Christ our risen Lord!

3/26 - End Times!

We hope you all had a blessed Spring Break and that classes have resumed well! We will be returning to our weekly meetings this Friday, Mar. 26th, in STEW 322 from 7 PM until 8:30 PM. This week, we will be taking a look at the end of the world! The End Times! 2012! Rapture! And so on! What will happen at the end of the world? What about the St. John's Revelation? Who is this Antichrist? We'll be tackling these issues tomorrow, so don't miss out.

Following the meeting, we will be going out for dinner. There will also be the Purdue Basketball Game where Duke will be seeing the end of their season. If St. Tom's will be showing the game, we will also hang out for that for all interest.

God bless

No Meeting - 2/26

The Catholic Truth League will not be meeting this week due to the "Into the Desert" Retreat going on from 2/26-2/28. We will resume meeting next Friday, 3/5, in Newman Hall at 7 PM.

God bless.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Purgatory

Morning!

We hope you all had a great time at Fr. Vince's presentation last week. To continue his topic somewhat, this week we will be looking at Purgatory! This means we will be discussing what Purgatory is, what are indulgences, and what exactly the 'harrowing of Hell' is. These are topics that are generally misunderstood or not understood at all, yet are very important in the Catholic Faith. We even mention the harrowing of Hell every week at Mass in the Creed. Do you know at what part? If not, come tomorrow and find out!

We will be meeting in STEW 202 on Friday, Feb 19, from 7 PM until 8:30 PM. Hope to see you all there!

In the love of Christ

Evil and Exorcism

Greetings Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This Friday, Feb. 12th, the Catholic Truth League is proud to host Fr. Vince Lampert, the Exorcist of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, to come speak on evil and exorcism from 7 PM until 8:30 PM in St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. The event will be held in the main Church area.

Fr. Vince will draw on his own experiences to discuss evil and exorcism, things our society tend to ignore, unaware of how real they truly are. The 1st Letter of St. Peter warns us that the devil is "circling like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, strong in faith" (1 Peter 5:8-9). To resist evil and truly grow in Christ, we must acknowledge that evil is a real presence in the world. However, we do not have to fear evil, for as our Lord Jesus Christ tells us, "In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world" (John 16:33). We hope to see you all in this truly unique experience to grow in Christ.

This is a free event. All are welcome, so feel free to bring friends.

In the love of Christ

Charisms

Greetings!

The Purdue Catholic Truth League will be meeting Friday (Tonight, Jan. 29) in Stewart 218D from 7 PM until 8:30 PM to discuss charisms. This is an area that isn't that well known and definitely worth discussion.

Hope everyone can attend! Have a blessed weekend.

In Christ.

Call Out!

As we officially kick off this new semester, CTL will be holding it's Call Out this Friday, Jan. 22nd, in Newman Hall at St. Tom's from 7-8:30 PM. Newman Hall is in the basement of St. Tom's. Just go downstairs and turn left.

There will be a slight introduction to CTL, our mission, and our plans for this semester. Then, we will jump right into the concept of "Sola Scriptura", or the idea that the Bible is the only source and rule of faith. This is contrary to the Catholic view, as we look to both the Bible and tradition as co-ordinate sources of our faith. We'll be discussing the history of the Bible, who may interpret Scriptures and why we need someone to interpret Scriptures.

Following our meeting, we will remain in St. Tom's for Pizza and a Game Night! All our welcome! Bring friends!

God bless.
