Below is the message from Beril Tezeller Arik, the organizer of the Student Mentorship project :
This year you
have the opportunity to mentor new graduate students. The
purpose of having
graduate student mentors (GSM) is to benefit the ESL community
at Purdue and new graduate students from the unique guidance,
support, and expertise that more experienced graduate students
can provide. While all new graduate students have access to
mentoring from their ICAP mentors, advisors or other professors
in the department, the peer mentor relationship can provide a safe
venue for helping new graduate students optimize their graduate experience.
Being a graduate student mentor entails contacting a new graduate student via email, answering his/her questions about housing, climate, shopping, how to get a student ID, orientation etc., meeting him/her to show him/her around when s/he arrives, and attending the party we will have for new grad students and their mentors. During the semester graduate student mentors are expected to meet with their mentees and answer their questions. If you are interested in volunteering for being a GSM, or you have further questions, please contact me by July 14th.
Thank you and have a great summer!
