Our research interests are advanced materials synthesis  and processing,  specifically in scalable manufacturing of 0D-3D micro/nanostructures, laser matter interaction, and mechanical/physical property enhancement of materials.  The applications are in energy transport, conversion and storage, load bearing, biomedical, electrical and optical devices.

Dr. Cheng received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Columbia University in 2002.    He received the Young Investigator Award from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) in 2007, the CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 2006, Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineer (SME) in 2007, ASME Chao&Trigger Young Investigator award in 2012.   Dr. Cheng served as an associate Editor for Journal of Manufacturing Process.  He also organized and chaired technical conferences and workshops of ASME, SME and other societies.

At Purdue, Dr. Cheng teaches IE370 "Manufacturing Process".
