Purdue Traditions

Glenwood enjoys participating in many of the Purdue Traditions on campus.

Old Oaken Bucket Game :: Last game of the football season each year for both Purdue and Indiana University. The Old Oaken Bucket is the traveling trophy that goes to the winner of the game. Each year the winner adds wither a P or an I to the end of the chain of letters. This rivalry is one of the most celebrated in the nation.

The Boilermaker Special :: The largest college mascot in the world, this replica of a steam powered train engine represents the University at all Football games and numerous other University events. The most recent of the Specials was unveiled in 1994 and is the sixth Special ever used. The Boilermaker Special also has a counter part, the Extra-Special, which began representation of the University in 1979. This model is much smaller and able to travel indoors where it is present at all Basketball games. The Purdue Reamer Club maintains both the Special and the Extra-Special.

The Purdue Grand Prix :: "The Greatest Spectacle in College Racing," this race takes place the last weekend in April each year. Many housing units or organizations sponsor Go-Karts for the rave. The driver and crew for each kart must be Purdue Students and Purdue student must complete all work on the kart. Glenwood became the first women's housing unit to sponsor a kart in 1998.

Mother's Weekend :: This weekend is the beginning of Gala Week, which culminates with the Grand Prix race. Mothers are invited to campus for the weekend to participate in many exciting events sponsored by both the University and various housing units. Other exciting events also take place this weekend such as the annual Bug Bowl sponsored by the Entomology Department and University Sing.

PMO Christmas Show :: Performed the weekend before finals during the first semester. The Purdue Musical Organizations, comprised of the Purdue Varsity Glee Club, The Purduettes, The University Choir, PMO Express, and the Purdue Bell Choir, perform to over 36,000 audience members during six shows. In recent years the show has been broadcast nationally on Public Television.

The Purdue "All-American" Marching Band :: One of the oldest and most storied college marching bands in the country. Purdue annually enrolls over four hundred students in the marching band without the University having a school of music. Purdue is home to the World's Largest Bass Drum and the Golden Girl, the best of the best in the world of twirling. Purdue was the first to break ranks and make a formation, the famous block "P."

Old Masters :: In the fall, several distinguished men and women are invited to Purdue to visit various residences on campus to talk about their careers and successes and "Real Life" experiences. Many housing units will pair up with another unit to hear an Old Master speak.
