What are Friday ReStore trips?
On Friday afternoons from 3:30-6:00 pm, we go to the Lafayette Habitat ReStore to volunteer our time. The ReStore is a retail thrift store in which lightly used or surplus building materials, furniture, and appliances are sold to the public at reduced prices. These items are usually donated by individuals, businesses, and organizations. All profits go directly toward the construction of new Habitat homes for hard-working, low-income families. (You can think of the ReStore as a "Goodwill" store for Habitat for Humanity.)
What will I do as a volunteer at the ReStore?
Volunteer responsibilities can vary from week to week, but common tasks include organizing merchandise, preparing merchandise for sale, pricing, cleaning, loading/unloading, and store maintenance.
What should I do if I want to volunteer at the ReStore?
To see whether or not there will be a ReStore trip any given week, either read our weekly Habitat email newsletter or check under "Friday ReStore Trips" on the right-hand side panel of our Purdue Habitat website. If there will be a ReStore trip, sign up before Friday by clicking on ReStore Signup, and filling out the necessary information (Sign-ups usually open on Wednesdays). Next, meet us in the lobby of Shreve Residence Hall at 3:35 pm. We will provide transportation to the ReStore. We usually return to campus at about 6:00 pm.
I have used furniture or appliances that I would like to donate to the Lafayette ReStore. How do I make a donation?
Call the Lafayette ReStore donation hotline at 765-423-2585 to see if the store will accept your item. In general, most appliances must be 10 years old or newer and in perfect working condition, and furniture must be free of stains, tears, and excessive wear. All donations are tax-deductible. Pick-up is available for large items such as sofas.
I am looking for furniture/appliances for my apartment/house that can be obtained at an affordable price.
Consider stopping by the Lafayette ReStore to see if it has anything that you might be interested in purchasing. Items that you might be able to find at the ReStore (depending on availability) include: couches, chairs, coffee tables, bookshelves, bed frames, refrigerators, microwaves, office furniture, washing machines, dryers, small appliances, cabinets, sinks, toilets, bathtubs, lamps, rugs, carpet, paint, and home decor items. Remember, the prices will often be 50-90% lower than normal retail value, and your purchase will help out a family in need! Store hours are from Tues.-Fri. from 10am-6pm and Saturdays from 9am-3pm. The Lafayette ReStore is located at 3815 Fortune Drive.
