My name is Haslyn Hunte.  I am the director of the Social Environment and Health Workgroup at Purdue University.

Social environments can be thought of as the groups to which we belong, the neighborhoods in which we live, the organization of our workplaces, and the policies we create to order our lives.  In our group, we focus on researching the differential exposure and differential health consequences of the social, political, and physical environment.

Our current projects include the: 1) Safety Net project, which aims to investigate the geospatial and sociodemographic determinants of healthcare seeking behavior within safety net providers in the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. 2) Indiana Black Men Health Study, a health needs assessment study that aims to a) identify attitudes, real and perceived issues, and factors that affect health among African American/Black males; b) identify opportunities and initiatives to prevent chronic health conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and HIV/STI; c) identify gaps in awareness, access, and utilization of health services.  3) Unfair treatment and health which aims to identify coping/behavioral responses (e.g. alcohol and drug use), physiological responses (e.g. obesity, hypertension) and inequity in treatment process.
