Pacific Loon at Stateline Power Plant in Hammond, Indiana
by Ed Hopkins, West Lafayette, Indiana, USA
A Pacific Loon (PALO) was observed off the east side
of the Stateline Power Plant on 21 January
2008 between 12:45 and 1:15 PM. The power plant is located in Hammond, Indiana, USA,
at the
very NW corner of the state.
The PALO was first seen foraging in a small opening
in the ice with several species of waterfowl. I
took a series of digiscope photographs. Because of the distance, I used a
telescope power of 60X,
which in itself is not desirable. Combine this with the gusty wind and
other factors, the photos are very
soft. They do allow easy identification.
