How
is the cost of food if I eat out for every meal? Does the
monthly fee of living at Young include cost of electricity,
air conditioning, heating, Internet access, and cable TV? In
addition to tuition fee, is there any other hidden cost which
I should pay at Purdue? |

I
need different kinds of furniture, such as TV, stereo, bed and
mattress, desk, chair, lamp, and sofa, etc. Where can I buy those
used furniture? |

I
read some article at NTU BBS saying that the quilt which can
be bought in U.S. stores is either of inferior quality (can't
keep warm) or of high price. I'm going to live in Young
Graduate House. Do I need to prepare the quilt in Taiwan? |

How
can I get to the West Lafayette main campus?
You can fly to Indianapolis
International Airport, Indiana (IND), then take the Lafayette
Limo at the Ground Transportation Center right next to the Bag
Claim area. The limo arrives every two hours. The cost is $22.00
for a one way trip. Please prepare the exact amount of cash, credit
card is not accepted. Besides, you should give the driver some tip
after he/she helps you to unload your luggage from the car.

Shall
I live in the dorm or off-campus? Which one is more suitable for a new
student?
It depends. If you don't have a car or not
plan to get one, living on campus will be a good choice. There are
also housing on campus but doesn't belong to Purdue. That is another
possibility to live "on campus".
If you decide to live in the dorm, you will
have more opportunities to get familiar with foreigners. If
you live off-campus, all you know will be your roommates. The only
chance to contact with foreigners would be in class.
The disadvantage about living in the dorm is
that you will not have a kitchen. You will still be able to use
the public microwave oven.

If
I want to live on-campus (Young or Hawkins), which building is better?
Do I have Internet access when I move in? Basically,
Young is more quiet due to the structure. Both of the buildings have
Internet access once you sign up. Hawkins is T1, and Young is ADSL. The major drawbacks of both buildings are
using public bathroom and that no kitchen is available. The advantages
are
- The buildings are located on campus, and
there is a sub walk toward to other campus buildings.
- Furnished, no utility fee, and free
cable TV.
- Room service once a week.

I
am a new student and plan to arrive Purdue before the official opening
day of the dorm. Is there any cheap temporary housing I can stay near
Purdue?
Please Email your detailed messages to ILTC
(your official name put on the lease, the room number and the date you
will arrive), then we can ask the office in Young or Hawkins for
arranging an early arrival.
The arrangement of early arrival will charge
you like several dollars a day (monthly rent/30 and times how many
days needed for the early arrival). The cheapest motel in Lafayette
might be 20 minutes away from Purdue.

of living at Young include cost of electricity, air conditioning,
heating, Internet access, and cable TV? In addition to tuition fee, is

The cost of meals depends on what food you
can afford. If you eat out every day and every meal, in average,
the cost should be USD10~15 daily.
The rental of Young and Hawkins includes
water, electricity, A/C, telephone, and cable TV. The Internet
connection is USD 50/yr (for 2001~2002).
About the tuition and health insurance, there
are documents about these issues in the admission package. You
have to buy the health insurance when you check in ISS. The only
hidden fee is the student ID.

If you can access any computer using an IP at
Purdue, you can find a lot of information on the News Bulletin at
Purdue.forsale, <purdue.forsale.housing> and <purdue.forsale.misc>
The News server is news.cc.purdue.edu

read some article at NTU BBS saying that the quilt which can be bought
in U.S. stores is either of inferior quality (can't keep warm) or of
high price. I'm going to live in Young Graduate House. Do I need to
prepare the quilt in Taiwan?
Young is cold in summer and hot in winter due
to the wired air conditioning policy. It is up to you whether you
prefer to bring the quilt from Taiwan. Some people may also bring
their stuff toys from Taiwan. You can simply buy a blanket in the
supermarket after you come to Purdue. You can also get a nice and warm
comforter (thicker and warmer then quilt, we call it "Da-Mien-Bei"
in Taiwan) here around $80. It's about the same price as in Taiwan.
However, you won't need it in Young.

I
plan to bring some electronic devices, such as hair dryer and rice
cooker, from Taiwan. Can the plugs match the socket?
The plug is the same as what we use in
Taiwan. US is 120VAC, and Taiwan is 110VAC, but it is not a big deal.

Is
it convenient to buy some traditional electronic devices, such as hot
pot and rice cooker, in Lafayette area? Yes,
you can find rice cooker, hot pot, and some other electronic devices
in oriental stores in Lafayette area. The prices might vary depending
on the store. Of course, they are more expensive than what you can
find in Taiwan.

|
I
need to pack my stuff recently and have no idea whether I can just
ship them directly to Purdue. Is there anyone can keep my stuff on
campus?
If you have signed up Young or Hawkins
Graduate House, you can ask the housing manager about your address and
ask them to keep your packages before you arrive Purdue. The housing
managers will like to help keeping new students' mail-in packages. You
can pick your packages in the front desk after arrival.

When
could I know which textbooks that the class is going to use? Should I
buy in Taiwan? Is it a good idea to buy used books?
You can check which course you are going to
take on ILTC website. There is another link for checking which
textbooks are going to be used for individual courses. For most of
cases, it might save you some money if you buy them in Taiwan, but not
all of those books are available in Taiwan. You can also buy the used
books here. The cost depends on where you buy the book. You can buy it
in the local bookstores, or you can order them via the Internet.

Is
there any short course of language program at Purdue?
The English as Second Language (ESL) program
is offered for the Purdue resident only. The program does not accept
any non-resident. You may check Indiana University for relative
programs.
