A letter from Mr. Richard G. Lugar (United States Senator), 30 July 1999.
Dear Hu,
Thank you for your recent correspondence regarding Taiwan.
I am a long-time supporter of Taiwan and its citizens. I feel it is
crucial that we continue to work to upgrade Taiwan relations and increase
its status and identity in the world. The remarkable democratic progress
and economic growth of Taiwan over the past several years are impressive.
It is the envy of many countries around the world. Currently, Taiwan ranks
as one of the wor;d's largest traders and one of our leading trade
partners. I believe our engagement, including private investment, with
Taiwan is important and must continue.
I have been supportive of effortd to increase the visibility and
interactioin of Taiwan in the international community. For example, I have
favored allowing Taiwan to become more actively involved in the United
Nations.
I cosponsored and voted in favor of a resolution expressing concern over
the missile tests and military activities of the People's Republic of
China in close proximity to Taiwan.
Thank you, again, for sharing your thoughts with me on this important
matter. I will continue to mointor this issue with our mutual concerns in
mind.
Sincerely,
Richard G. Lugar
United States Senator
