Six Weeks with a Puppy

After six weeks with a puppy, I have to say I don’t recognize my life. Everything has to be planned around the dog’s schedule. I haven’t slept-in in six weeks. The house is usually in an interesting state of mess now. Before we got Murphy, we assumed he would force us to keep a tidy house to prevent him from getting into things he shouldn’t. Unfortunately Murphy has picked up rather quickly on what he is and is not allowed into. While he’ll be overly curious when we start eating in the living room, at the coffee table, Dave left a quarter sandwich on the coffee table last week, and with a single scolding, Murphy would look (smell) but not touch it. Since the leaves started falling from my (huge) trees in the front yard, there are leaves all over the house. Murphy doesn’t have a problem with this, of course, since it gives him something to randomly sniff out and eat when we aren’t enough entertainment for him.

The guy is also gaining about five pounds a week. This is a little surprising to the other puppy owners at puppy class, since some of their dogs don’t weight five pounds. Let’s just say this makes play time a little interesting. Last week, Murphy was playing with a mean terrier in class. The other dog was snapping at him, showing his teeth, etc. Recently Murphy has become very excited and playful around other puppies, so we were surprised when he stood there and took it. Once play time started though, he was tromping all over the terrier, at one point lifting he other dog off the ground and flipping him over by grabbing his back right left. Sounds like a Blue Heeler to me.

There are now a few more pics of Murphy online.

Thanksgiving

So, tomorrow is Canadian Thanksgiving but my roommates and I are celebrating today. We bought a turkey, lots of veggies, and five bottles of wine for the occasion, so it should be a lot of drunken fun. Yesterday Alicia made an apple pie from scratch while I attempted to make my mother’s cabbage roles. (All I can say is they are a pain in the ass…)

On another note, I haven’t posted pics of Murphy, the exponentially growing dog. Lately he’s been doing very well. Potty-training is almost complete, and we go several days without any accidents now. He enjoys walks in Happy Hollow park, and walks very nicely on his (purple) leash. We used a rather interesting method to acclimate Murphy to the leash. We tie him to a post, stand back twenty-feet, and watch him struggle. Once he realizes he can’t fight the leash and accepts it’s restraint we step is, give his praise and treats, and set him free from the nasty pole. We are no longer the enemy, the pole is, and he’ll happily walk closely to his saviors. The only down side to the method if my nosy neighbors think I’m torturing my pup.

Did I mention he’s a big boy?
