Lunch Study : Evil and the
Justice of God (N.T. Wright)
From
the Publisher :
We hear of child abuse, ethnic
cleansing, AIDS, torture and terrorism, and
rightfully we are shocked. But, N. T. Wright says, we should not
be surprised.
For too long we have naively believed in the modern idea of
human progress. In
contrast, postmodern thinkers have rightly argued that evil is
real, powerful
and important, but they give no real clue as to what we should
do about it.
In fact, evil is more serious than either our culture or our
theology has
supposed. How then might Jesus' death be the culmination of the
Old Testament
solution to evil but on a wider and deeper scale than most
imagine? Can we
possibly envision a world in which we are delivered from evil?
How might we
work toward such a future through prayer and justice in the
present?
For many, evil in the world is a
major stumbling block for in belief in Christianity, and this is
an especially pertinent topic in the modern university. We will
be going through N. T. Wright's 2007 book over the course of the
Fall semester. Lunch discussion meetings will be approximately 1
hour.

Evening Study : Book of Daniel
(recently concluded)
The Old Testament account of Daniel
demonstrates how God-following men and women can walk in truth -
even in thoroughly secular environments skeptical of biblical
truth. Through the fall semester, we will be looking at the
numerous parallels between Daniel's tenure in Nebuchadnezzar's
court and our own
experience in graduate school.
In addition, we will hear several
invited guests talk about integrating Christian faith with their
academic pursuits as well as spend weekly time in prayer.
