The field known as metabolomics seeks to understand cellular metabolic processes by analyzing the dynamics and patterns in small molecule metabolite concentrations. Previously, we explored novel ambient mass spectrometry methods for detecting central carbon metabolites in E. coli. Also, our group has adapted GC/MS and LC/MS/MS methods for quantification of metabolites in mammalian and algal cells, as well as plant matter.

We are also currently developing analytical methods for detecting and quantifying intermediates of the shikimate and the phenylpropanoid pathway. We intend to use these methods in tandem with transient labeling experiments for generating compartment specific labeling information, for algae and plant systems.
