Course Policies:
This syllabus serves as your contract for this class. Remaining in this class means you are responsible for knowing and following the policies listed below.
Late Work: Late work is bad for both of us because it makes it impossible for me to give feedback which may be beneficial to you for the next assignment. I do not grade work that is turned in after the initial due date. I do not make exceptions for computer catastrophes or email glitches, so save your work often and do not wait until the last minute to turn in your work. Being absent does not relieve students from the responsibilities of this course.
Academic Misconduct: The Department of English expects its students to adhere to the university’s code of student conduct, especially as it pertains to academic conduct. Plagiarism of any sort will not be tolerated and may result in a failing grade for this course. (For a complete definition of plagiarism and the university’s policies on academic misconduct visit: http://www.purdue.edu/ODOS/osrr/integrity.htm).
Tardiness: Coming to class late, or leaving early, is disruptive and disrespectful. Please arrive on time and be prepared to work through the entire class period. If you arrive more than ten minutes late, I reserve the right to mark you absent. If for some reason you must leave class early, please notify me before class begins.
4. Attendance: Writing is a social act and because of this you are required to attend and participate in every class. Attendance will be taken before all classes and conferences. Because this course is conducted as a workshop with in-class writing exercises, writing assignments, and group activities, the work in this course cannot be “made-up.” For this course there is no such thing as an excused absence and I make no distinction between an absence due to illness and an absence due to laziness. Remember that emergency situations do occur, so please avoid using your absences unnecessarily. You may miss a combined total of FOUR (4) classes or conferences during the semester without penalty. Any additional classes or conferences missed will result in the lowering of your final grade by one full letter. Students who miss more than a combined total of EIGHT classes or conferences will automatically fail the course.
Professionalism: Students should conduct themselves in a professional manner and avoid harassing, threatening, or belittling language at all times. All electronic devices except personal computers should remain off and out of sight during class time. Failure to comply will result in the student being marked absent and asked to leave for the day.
Grammar: Although grammatical issues will not be stressed or taught, students should be aware that every piece of academic writing needs to be polished mechanically. This is not a grammar course. Students having problems with grammatical issues are encouraged to visit the English Writing Lab located in Heavilon Hall 226.
Accommodations for Students with Special Needs:
Students with disabilities must be registered with Adaptive Programs in the Office of the Dean of Students before classroom accommodations can be provided. Students who need accommodations are asked to arrange a meeting with the instructor during the first week of classes or as soon as possible if accommodations are needed immediately.
