English 203 Project #3

Introduction to Professional Writing Research

Project #3: Instructions

The final project for this semester is deceptively simple. In groups of no more than 2-3 people, you will produce two sets of instructions for a technology of your choice. One set will be written instructions (print genre) and one set will be for another media-rich genre of your choice. Examples include but are not limited to web page, audio (podcast), video (You Tube), powerpoint, blog, and so on.

One of the goals of this assignment is to learn how to present the same information in different genres. Other goals include learning how to write instructions, how to break down steps in a process, how to explain complex concepts, how to write for diverse audiences, and how to use multimedia technologies in rhetorically appropriate and ethical ways.

You may choose any technnology you like for this assignment, so feel free to move away from your current topic if needed. But again, it may also be easier to work with the same ideas for this final project. A not so unrelated idea is to create instructions for something on campus or in the community that you think is needed (e.g. instructions on how to fix the printer in 227 Heav if it jams). We can then try to implement those instructions in the actual situation.

Since you are working in teams, you will need to complete the collaborative work assessment form when you submit your drafts.

Deliverables

A proposal memo is due to the instructor on Thursday, April 2. This memo should outline the technological instructions chosen, the media you will be using and why you have chosen this media, potential audiences, and the break-down of work among team members.

A draft of this project is due for peer review on Tuesday, April 14.

The final project is due on Thursday, April 16.
